Stupid chain question, reusing a clip?

OK, time for a n00b chain question. I'm replacing the chain and sprockets on my bike and, like a n00b, took off (and threw away) the old endless chain before loostening the nut on the drive sprocket. If I assemble the new chain (clip type master link) and mount it on the old sprocket long enough to loosten the nut, can I unclip the master link, remove the chain, then re-use the same clip once I get the new sprocket on? Are these clips one-time use only?
