The detour started out great, it appeared to be a service road, about 1.5 lanes wide, with no center stripe. I was following the Aprilia Futura and Mille, (yes they tried to loose me, but to no avail, as they kept slowing down, and going around dips, bumps, dirt, and gravel… he he.)
Our first indication of fun was a small sign stating that the road was closed, due to wash outs… Yippee! Let’s go check it out.
Well a mile or two later we found what they were talking about! See below.
A 4' (yes four foot) diameter tree had come down the hillside, and was completely blocking the road, along with it, as you can imagine, a huge amount of debris. Someone had started piling up logs and dirt on both sides of the tree, maybe mountain bikers, or true Dualsports. I took one look, and thought "This is it, time to turn around. We're not getting five sport bikes and a freakin' Harley Davidson over this thing!"

The bikes "fared" surprisingly well. The most vulnerable were the sportbikes with low slung fairings that hit when the bikes high centered. The only real damage was a missing kickstand spring on the HD. The obstacles were a result of the storms in November '06.

The right tool for the job:
Unknown to us, the log was the first of THREE obstacles we had to overcome. The next one was a real wash out that was a good 20' to the bottom. We went around on a very narrow and SOFT shoulder.

Then came the final challenge: TWO jersey barriers, end to end, completely blocking passage to the main road. To our right the barrier extended out over the drop off. And the other nearly butting up to the hillside on the left. We did what we could to minimize the impact to nature, and dug out just enough dirt to allow passage. Of course, our saddle bags had to be removed to make it through.
We all made it through, and continued on south to the WA/OR boarder where we camped on the
Turns out I like the rain, easier to Spin, Skid and Slide.
