First things first: must...have...coffee... Glad I had my own along.

And the breakfast of chammpeeeennnnsssss!

132 miles yesterday and I would have to do about that to get back to Reno today. I knew some of the route was going to be fast, but there were a couple of unknown sections.

Such as...

This shoulda been my first clue, but I found a route up and around this gate and there weren't any no trespassing signs or anything. Actually the next gate said "please close gate" so I knew I was kinda okay.

This is Cory Canyon.

This road went up. And up. And up. Beautiful, and not too cold.

Then, 14 miles up I run into this:

Now I'm generally not one to mess with the US Government (except at tax time) but I needed to be on the other side of that gate. I looked for alternatives...

No dice. So I hightailed it back down the canyon and managed to not ride off the edge of one of the switchbacks.

One hour later I'm at the top of Lucky Boy Pass...again. Damnit.

Now I kinda gotta haul some ass to make up for the hour I just burned. A "locked gate 14 miles ahead" sign would've saved me a bunch of time. The view was nice though.

First snow of the season.

Here's where I would've come down.

Oh well, next stop, Flying M.

The search has been way scaled back since I passed by here last week.

Nice to have money huh?

No cop eyeballing me this time...

From here it was 60 mph into Smith Valley. Even with my heavy gloves on my hands got cold. Topped off, grabbed a burger and a cup o' joe and called it good.

Wilson Canyon in between Smith Valley and Yerington. Looks like fun.

Back up the valley past Nevada Hot Springs. Well, what's left of 'em...

This creek was steaming.

On the trip down I rode thru Eldorado Canyon. That pretty much sucked on a loaded bike. Brunswick Canyon was the other option. And it was much, much better.

Things are looking familiar again... Slide Mtn in the distance. Used to ski there a lot.

Freakish swarm of Crows here...

I had never seen so many birds in one place. Strange.

Ended up at the Brunswick Mill and couldn't find my way across the river. Eventually I found a route out and popped out right into the east side of Carson City.

Next stop, Mound House. Called my sis-in-law and told her where I was. She promptly called my wife.

Hmmm. Funny. I didn't even notice the Pony Express sign.

Recently Mound House had had a fire. Check out the retardent.

This is the backside of Virginia City and the old American Canyon mine.

So much cool riding up here. Apparently the driving isn't quite as good.

Looking back down at Washoe Valley.

Let's finish this little tale, shall we?

Looking back down the hill, Mound House and the "ranch" in the distance:

Dayton:

Reno:

Choices:

Critters:

So I'm up on the ridge between VC and Washoe Valley, almost back to my brother and sister-in-laws place. I feel it ending soon. My gps is telling me that there's another route down that connects to the Toll Road route that I took up when I left. I'm in!

My first hint should've been the lack of tracks. Of any kind.

Most of the trail wasn't this bad, but there were a few spots like the above pics that I needed to get off the bike and scout ahead. I didn't hear any cougars or bears so I was good with it still.

Then this:

The boards were way to precarious, even walking across. One actually dropped in the creek bed when I put my foot on it. I did think for about 10 seconds about pushing the bike across but figgered if I fell in that ditch I was SOL and would be hiking the rest of the way back to the truck.

Back up the hill, bear poop on the right??

Uneventful ride back down the Toll Road and back to the truck. Whew! It's over! 179 miles on this last day for 520 total in three days.

Thanks for reading!

That's strange with the crows. I've seen bats do that in broad daylight before. I wonder if there was some sort of bug hatch that they were feeding on?

Enjoyed following this tale, Brad. Gave me new vantage points on where I live and showed me where NOT to take the Bandit!! Talk about some desolate riding!!
Thanks again!
