Starter failed; engine making AWFUL clunks; 2004 5500 miles
I have already received some great information from this board on some minor issues and I thank all who have given feedback to my question. Now it seems I am in a potentially dire (mechanical situation).
I have read much about the starter issues suffered by the LC8 on this forum, however I have not until today seen any symptoms. However I got them ALL today!
Bike has never made any weird noise on starting, nor has it been difficult to start previously. Today I took a forty mile ride, with four stops. On each stop, starting became progressively weaker, but I put it down to an impending battery problem. However, during the last 10 miles I felt a steadily worsening clunking from the engine, and when I stopped to investigate, the engine refused to restart. The starter spun up, but did not engage. I finally managed to get the thing push started, and rode the remaining eight miles home with the horrible clunking continuing, and of course the bike still would not start when I got home.
First thoughts, having reviewed the repair manual, is that the freewheel has failed or the bolts have loosened. So the questions:
- is my initial diagnosis correct? Freewheel junked?
- the bike is an '04 so there was supposed to be some TSB completed on the starter/freewheel? Correct or not?
- How much is this going to cost
