doing the simpson end april?
Gidday,
Im doing an 'Ewie' (Ewan McGregor) in Oz which has taken me -so far- from the Gold Coast, to Tassie and now heading towards Flinders Ranges. Birdsville next via Strzelecki track and contemplating crossing the Simpson via the French Line. This is something I would rarther not do solo.... Looking for fellow Simpson travellers (east to west) around end of April... Anyone going? Greetz Meindert - Dutchy.

Possibly maybe ...
G'day Dutchy,
Sounds like a good trip you are having but careful with the "doin a ewie" phrase, some in the wool trade might get the wrong idea! ![]() It is possibly a bit early for me but have you got some dates that you might be working towards for the Birdsville departure? Cheers, Dave

well, taking it easy for a few days in flinders ranges... suppose we are looking
at end april now. from what i heard so far, the dunes have sharp slopes at both ends now because of the change of winds. anyway, will see when im there

Simpson - French line
Gidday, still alive and kicking after crossing the simpson from east to west on the french line in 3 days.... !!!
Some parts were pretty rough, especially 20k between Poeppel and Lindsay corner, soft sand and lots of off piste riding (sanddunes have covered the track). Around Colson cnr the dunes get higher, good fun! Did the crossing solo, with the help of Wolfgang who dropped me a 20L petrol jerry at Poeppel. Well, im extremely pleased that i made it through. Next time i would definatly consider getting some support which will allow you to take things easier and enjoy the desert a bit more rarther then focussed on the driving... Some stats 20L water. Drank 4L firstday, 6L 2nd and 3L 3rd day. In total (inc cooking etc) about 16Liters. Used about 45L fuel between Birdsville and Mt Dare (good people there). Tips: Go light! Get going at sunrise getting those cool K's in the morning, take plently of breaks. On most clayplans I stopped for 5 min to cool down, have a sip and some munchies. When riding off piste, take your time, stop of top of dunes for a good view and look for your course rarther then following the 4WD track which are more often very soft. And remember, big heavy bikes dont like sharp corners in sand! But most off all, avoid dropping that bike / getting bogged! Energy sapping..Carried a Satphone (hired from Birdsville info centre about 120AUD) and flares (from peter on advrider) but would also consider taking a UHF next time. Greetz / Meindert

Well done! I was nervious when I did it in my LandCrab, solo on a bike is gutsy.
Glad you made it safe'n'sound, Legend has it that the XL frames rider didn't live to tell the tail. Ads
