Stupid DRZ Mistake
Y'all will probably think I'm an idiot after reading this post bit it's sort of a funny story. About a month ago I went down to the Port Aransas along the Texas coast for a week of fishing and exploring with the DRZ400. I go down to the coast several times each year and I'm always anal about rust, I spent a lot of time riding the DRZ on the beach and washed it daily. The day before I left noticed some surface rust on the discs and a few other places. Decided to spray some Corrosion-X on it until I could get home and square things away. Corrosion-X is sort of like a rust inhibiting spray grease, great stuff.
When I got home I cleaned the crap out of the DRZ. Cleaned the discs and pads really well and scrubbed the surface with sandpaper. Figured that was good enough. A couple of weeks ago I bought an SV650. Left the truck with the hitch-hauler on it at the dealer and rode the SV home. Hopped on the DRZ to get back to the dealer fits well on the hauler). Nothing odd with the brakes for the first few stops, got on a major road and took her up to about 70. Approached the first stoplight and guess what, brakes didn't work worth a crap. There was about 10 seconds of pure terror as I tried to slow her down before going into the intersection. Brakes fully clamped in a death grip and she still didn't want to stop. Stupid, yes. Lesson learned, never get Corrosion-X anywhere near the discs. On the plus side the DRZ was a blast in the sand.
