N VA to Chicago route suggestions???

I am plan on finishing my RT66 trip from last summer. Heading East on RT66 I had to peel off at Joplin, MO and was not able to finish the run. I would like to finish the RT66 run from Chicago west to Joplin and then ride MO, AK, and TN back to VA.
My question is does anyone know of a sweet route or partial routes from Northern VA to Chicago, where I would then pick up RT66? I plan on leaving in a couple of day's. Thanks for any advice/ direction given.
