Old 650GS vs New 650GS

Sorry if this is already answered (I searched and couldn't find it).

I have an '05 650GS, but find it a little sluggish on the highway. I'd like the new 800, but seat height is a huge obstacle (28" inseam). Has anyone traded from the old BMW 650 thumper to the new 650? Did you notice a big difference in power? Please comment on any positives / negatives of the newer model as compared to the old. Thanks!

I'm not sure they have released the new "650GS" yet - however they had one at the XPLOR Blue Ridge Event:



The seat seemed much lower then my Dakar, and F650GS's that I've ridden. That said, the spec's say its a 32" seat height.

Powerwise? There will be no comparison.

Old: 50hp @ 423lbs
New: 71hp @ 439lbs

The de-tuned twin rotax will have considerably more grunt, and then 20 more horses to pull the same weight, with an improved street suspension.

Take a test ride and let us know what ya think.

There is a low seat option and a lower suspension option. The bike in that picture has the low seat.

I read a report on the WWW (dont recall where, but google) that said the Dakar was more of an 'allrounder' than the new twin 650. Yes the twin 650 has more power, but in the dirt, who cares - anyone who can use all 50HP of the single 650 is a legend.

Hypothesising here:

Road/Two Up: twin 650 better
All Else: Dakar+Ohlins rear susp+TT front progressive springs > twin650

Single is proven VS Twin for longevity. In the middle of nowhere, I know what one I want.

I have ridden the new twin 650, and yes it has more power.
And low seat, low suspension available.
The standard seat sucks

I dont think I would trade my F650GS single for the new twin though.
The single has ample power for most occasions, even for me at 230lbs with riding gear on.
I will wait for the 800GS, and see what that is like.

That's where I am - my XChall has become the most fun bike I've ever owned - and so far the most versitile.

Lovin it! Its making my next bike decision very hard. I may go with the twin 650 because of the price.


Does anyone know if the twin 650 can rock around in Knobbies?

I rode the "new" 650 (800) at a BMW day. Engine is very good, really punchy. Didn't like the build quality though or the lack of anything as standard. I rode the standard bike, no lowered this or that. I'm 5' 6" and didn't have a problem.

I spent 11 days on a new '650'. Way better highway bike. Standard seat was fine for eight hour days. My Dakar better off-road, am waiting for used F800GS's to start showing up.

I wouldn't want an 800GS or 650GS for serious offroading because of their weight and cost. I'll keep my DR650 for dirt duty. Dropping the Suzuki doesn't cost as much.

I'm getting the new F 650 as a more comfortable/versatile replacement for my SV650. I can't see the new 650 being a replacement for the old one if you take your offroading seriously.

I have a small crf230 for the dirt, i'm looking for a bike I can take to Alaska in the next couple of years. This bike might do the trick!
