Desolation Wilderness - Info

I am not trying to turn this forum in to the Lake Tahoe forum butt I am looking for a little info on the Desolation Wilderness (DW).

I have spent quite a bit of time in and around the DW and have seen pyramid Lake from the above. For July 4th SWMBO and I are going to go camping. She loves the DW area and I have never been to Pyramid Lake in the 20+ times I have been to the DW so why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

We will be entering the wilderness via Echo Lake - not sure she would like climbing up Horestail with a pack on her back.

From there I am looking for route suggestions...

Would it be better to take the trail to the south east of Lake of the Woods to Ropi and then work our way into Pyramid Lake from there or...

Head straight for the spillway on Lake Aloha and then cross country past Waca Lake to Pyramid?

Any other local knowledge that you may be willing to share would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich
