I've been watching your thread a little. I also ride a DRZ. I guess I wasn't watching close enough, since I missed your roof top party. I Live in Colorado, and work out of Newark. I was in Newark on June 24th. Oh well maybe next time. What a great ride. The DRZ wouldn't have been my choice, but great to see it work so well for you. I have put some 200 mile dualsport rides on, but after that I want my VStrom.

Planning update

Well, since the thread's been bumped I'll throw up an update. We'll be leaving Sept. 6, and returning on the 21st for another 2 weeks of the TAT with trimmings

We'll fly into Albuquerque, and return from Phoenix, leaving the bikes in Flagstaff where my brother lives. Here's a rough draft of our route:

We'll backtrack most of the way (some new routing) to where we left the TAT in NE NM. Hopefully there won't be snow on the ground and we'll get to ride through the Carson Nat. forest which we had to skip on the way down. We'll also check out the Capulin Volcano. We'll do the TAT from NM through CO, to about where it crosses I-15 in UT, then we'll leave the TAT and veer south to check out Bryce canyon and Zion NP, then on to the North Rim, around at Marble Canyon, and down (up) to Flagstaff. A day or two with the nephew & niece, then take the bus to Phoenix and fly home.

I've still got to arrange for new rear rubber in Trinidad, and for the storage unit in Flagstaff.

We're leaving a little late in the season, so hopefully we will get through the CO passes before the '09 ski season starts. On the other hand, maybe the leaves will be changing.

Nothing new really on the gear front. With the airlines charging an arm and leg for extra / overweight baggage, it's even more motivation to just duplicate our camping / riding gear. We'll leave as much as we can with the bikes after this leg.

Oh, I almost forgot... we'll be carrying a Spot unit, and I'll post up our tracking page once I get it all sorted out. The nieces and nephews will love it, and the parents maybe won't worry so much.

Hi Dave & Francine, Funny I saw this thread this am. I am leaving Olympia, Wa in just a few minutes for the TAT. A friend of mine has almost finished and wanted some company the last 4 or 5 days. Gonna meet him somewhere at the end of Nv. Roxanne has been helping me with last minute packing as I just learned last night that I was going. Don't want to hijack ur thread too bad so I'll sign off. Keep in touch, I'll be following ur all's progress. Rick & Roxanne

Have a great trip! We'll have to catch up when you get back... I want to hear how the new DR front end is treating you.

Talk to PJ at Valcomm Motorsports. He gave me excellent prices on everything I bought there. Let him know you're riding the TAT.

Looking forward to the RR

Geee, I'm in Ironbound right now. Talk about out of place, wish I were home in Colorado, going to Hong Kong tomorrow. I'm definatley on the WRONG side of the Missouri river. Anyway you will be ridding the best time of the year. Things really dry out in the fall with warm days and cool nights. Some of the colors will start to change in the higher elevations. Could be a random snow storm, but even a foot of snow doesn't last more than a couple days this time of year. If you get up toward Cannon City, head up Shelf Rd to Cripple creek. There are Dinosaur tracks fossiles etc along there, and Gambling in Cripple Creek. You can stay at the "Hospitality house" Camp or stay in the Restored Victorian mansion. Free Wifi, and shuttle into the main area of town. Very nice ride up that canyon. Phantom canyon also is a very nice ride. The Railroad from Cannon City has a nice trip down the Royal Gorge, or raft it, ride the rail back. Certainly the best time of year. and it's archery hunting season, so certainly even better! the Elk wil be starting to bugle (mating call), and it turns the Mountains into a magical time.

MobiusII prep update: T-5 days!

So all the behind-the-scenes work has been steadily going on to make the magic happen...

5X10 storage unit waiting in Flagstaff: check.
Tires waiting at Valcom in Trinidad: check.
Parts for maintenance & repair bought & packed: check.
DRZ registrations renewed: check. (almost missed that one)
Spot activated and set up: check.
Weather patterns monitored: check.
Clothing & gear selected: check.
Packing: that's what we're up to...

A couple of things to point out in the above photo. First, since we've left a bunch of gear out west (boots, tent, etc), we thought we could get away with packing everything into a single EMS pack-pack, especially since one of them was destroyed by the airlines last time.

The good news is everything fit in there. The bad news is it weighed 70lb. . With the new airline baggage restrictions, we're each allowed only one checked bag, less than 50lbs. So into Chinatown we went, and procured the finest in woven plastic valise. We separated the heavy hard stuff (tools, parts, etc.) -- 30lb, and put it, double bagged, in the immigrant-luggage, and left all the soft stuff in the big duffel -- 40lb. So we're set, it would seem, except for the size restriction of 62inches (L+W+D)... that big mother is 67" no matter how I measure it. So we'll see if Delta is going to be hard-asses about it.

Another thing you'll note hiding amidst that pile of gear is a new passenger for this ride... We introduce to you...

Ms. Adventure Bunny!

Yes, like Mr. Happy Puppet, Ms. Adventure Bunny is a moral booster, but more importantly, she has a rendezvous at the end of our trip with our niece Lilliana in Flagstaff (whom we've NEVER met(!).

Here she is with her big brother, Leo, having an adventure of their own last summer:

The plan is to bring Ms. Adventure Bunny along with us, photograph her having all sorts of adventures along the way, and then present her to Lilly when we get there. LDF says this will help teach her that girls can have awesome adventures too, but I think Lilly is well on her way to understanding that already.

For now, though, Ms. Adventure Bunny (Ms. A.B. from here on), will have to boost morale, starting with consoling me for having sat on my glasses and broken them:

No way am I getting them replaced before next saturday. Luckily, I have a spare pair... a little old and outdated. LDF thinks they make me look like a massive geek. Ms. A.B. agrees:

So that's where we stand, about to embark on Mobius II... or "how to travel from Albuquerque to Flagstaff in 2 weeks and 2300 miles"
