I like these things

and try to photograph them whenever I find them.

This was promising

as we motored to the next viewing area, but it still wasn't enough to shake the feeling that we weren't really enjoying ourselves.

The thing is, we were both starting to feel a little disappointed.

not with the scenery, it was beautiful,

but the rhythm of our trip had been drastically altered. We were dressed for the wild, had slept in the wild, had eaten and lived in the wild for long enough that we couldn't just step out of it in an instant.

We asked someone to take our picture together.

and instead of continuing down the pavement to see more vistas overlooking Bryce canyon, we decided to try to get to Zion for the night. Whatever was causing it, not being able to fully appreciate Bryce canyon was kind of the low-point for me of the trip.

I think maybe we'll come back someday, and stay for a few days, and hike around, and try to immerse ourselves and experience the place (like we'd done everywhere else on our Mobius trips), rather than just "see" it.

On the way out

we saw this, and I was very tempted to stop.

We're going to have to catch a Rodeo at some point.

Yee, Haaah!

I'd tried to connect

Bryce and Zion via dirt roads that I'd found on GoogleEarth and the Garmin Topo maps. But when we got to where we were supposed to turn, we found that they were restricted service roads.

So we routed on pavement.

which wasn't bad.

for pavement.

I guess. (126 miles on the day at this point @ 3:40pm.) Think we got a campsite at Zion?

We were almost to Zion

We passed the Buffalo herd.

Didn't stop. They sure looked skinny though. I mean, for buffalo.

Unlike Bryce

Zion

isn't about stopping,

parking,

walking to an overlook,

taking your photos,

walking back to the car, (or camper, or RV, or bus)

No. Zion is about the road.

I'm sure

there are some awesome hikes,

where you can see nature,

or maybe stop at the visitor's center,

and read about how the canyons were formed,

and what each of the different layers (or "strata")

come from,

but all you really need to know about Zion,

is that it's a really fun road to drive,

even more so on a motorcycle,

and again more when riding with one hand on the bars,

and the other snapping photos.

it keeps you from speeding, anyway. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

They make you wait

at the big tunnel.

which is a good place to catch your breath, anyway.

On the other side,

there are some steep switchbacks,

and you drop into the canyon.

The back and forth of the switchbacks is dizzying,

but it does mean that you get fabulous views of the cliffs from all directions.

Eventually,

the road straightens,

and flattens,

and if, like us, you find the campsite full in the National Park itself, and if you drive right by the close one that's right next to the park entrance, well then, you will find yourself quite a few miles down the road.

So I plugged into the GPS

take us to the closest lodging,

and it pointed on down the road a few more miles.

Fine. It's been (another) long day.

Bring it on.

Down

down,

down.

Until we got here, to

or the most psychologically disturbing place we stayed the entire trip.
