more in the Mutt is a dope series of dumb questions - the Volkswagen Thing chronicles
you know those questions that you know are going to make you look stupid when you get the answer and it was staring you in the face
well I am about to look mechanically inept, if not outright dumb first I mount the VW on this stand which means you can't check the valves or set it to TDC because the flywheel is bolted to the stand ![]() fine I get most of it put together then I order one of these ![]() but my work benches wont support the weight so I weld that motherfucker to my regular engine stand (ignore the super sloppy welds, I am new at that too) ![]() so now I am feeling all clever and shit which is how I usually know I am in trouble well dammit once you wrestle the goddamn engine supprt on to the motor mount stud (which comes damn close to mangling the threads because the support is so far out of spec) ![]() the threads do not go all the way down the stud so how in the hell do you get the sucker securely mounted? ![]() and don't even begin to ask me what a pain in the ass cleaning the damn oil screen was because someone did have enough threads out on one of the bolts so I ordered the special wrench from Bernzomatic/Grinder industries to fix that ![]() so how do I secure that damn motor without breaking a stud since the threads don't go all the way down and by loosening up a oil screen bolt with new spiffy single purpose special 10mm wrench cranking the oil screen bolt down from outside the case how long before it works loose from the inside and frags the whole fucking motor

Do you have something that could act like a spacer? Like a piece of pipe or a deep socket or a hunk of petrified shit. Maybe a couple nuts that have a larger i.d. than the stud?
Or maybe you're using it upside-down?

Easily trainable

When in doubt bush it out.
Or you could get a tap n die set and MAKE the threads go all the way down the rod.... Oh, and is there a locktite product that'll work in oily environs?

IIRC, there isn't enough room for a stack of washers between the flywheel and the studs. If you've got some tubing of the correct diameter that'll work. Gotta hacksaw? If you don't have the right tubing, then I'd use some 3/8s sockets. Deep sockets would be the ticket but a coupla regular length sockets will do. I would SUGGEST you choose sockets you aren't going to need for the upcoming fun and games...

Look at the way the engine will load those studs if it's mounted that way. It will probably break two chunks out of the crankcase and we will see a "I dropped a VW engine on my foot call 911" thread.

Mutt, after all the electro/mechanical fuckups you've had, I can say with confidence that you are fully qualified to be one of my officers.
For Christ's sakes man, quit trying to be a wrench.
