SA Adv Rider "The Big One" Report

If you recall: Scene Setting for "The Big One": "As you depart at 8am from the Liberty Servo top of Magill Rd, you will leisurely cruise a smooth winding road over a summit and climb a steep, tight dirt track before engrossing yourself with over 30 kms of glorious, fantastic, smooth, undulating, scenic, often loose surfaced, sometimes tight & twisty "rally roads" You will think you are in Eden as you relax the smile on your face while resting at a pleasant bakery. Continuing north on yet more "rally roads" often teeming with wild life (if Jase is in front of you) you will decend along a pipe line for a tad of plain sailing ie Twelve Mile Plain, Big Plain, Round Plain or Craigie Plain to Mount Mary for maybe a xmas lunch or refresher if so desired. The return journey will start with more plain sailing, developing into route adlibbing on the run as the day's fun draws to a close."
Warning ! ! ! .... you can count on over 300 - 400kms of relentless, filthy dirt roads & tracks

Well! ..... for those that missed it ...... can I tell you ...... it was "The Big One" ....... over 10hrs in the saddle, less a bit here & there for relief and over 450kms covered at a clean, crisp, flowing, brisk pace that kept a huge smile on ya face & the heart pumping ................. even thumping a few times, with that accompanying nice warm gooey sensation on the seat

Everyone had an absolutely fantastic ride ...................................well! .................errr! except?

Now for "The Truth" (which of course won't get in the way of a good story )

The "Big One" eventuated from a few loose words made after two ... errr .... too many champagne beers, but delivery was nothing less than sheer ecstacy without the swallowing

Those brave individuals who took up the challenge this special day, went home with that exact same feeling.

As indicated in the "setting the scene" senario, there are "special" tracks that just feel owned by those who have found such euphoria that blows their mind.

Consequently photo opportunities are mostly rare ....... you know you've been sucked in ....... you sense you are breathing (& riding) faster and ....... the pace doesn't let up 'til the end ...... and this would be the case with what was planned.

Luckily I remained strong on my recce so I can share a few pics to place the scene

Whoah! ...................... what a ride

The manditory bakery stop

We're a neat bunch of lads, don't ya reckon?

Now that there's no fuel at Tungkillo, Sol took us on a short cut to Palmer

It can't possibly be that long?

This was the pace most of the day

Going! ........ going! ................ go ....

Stop it Jase! ........ you're killin' me ....... stop playing around ...... I just can't sit on the bike any longer watching you, without fallin' off myself

Are you really, truly, absolutely sure you don't want a hand?

Has your chocolate melted again?

I got it! ...... I can see it .....................it's in the middle

Another nice warm feeling moment by some

Regrouping before the pub

The quick trip home

Yet again great company Merry Christmas & a safe New Year to all

You can see that it is gonna get ugly for that 640 as soon as he hits that mud.

I like how you guys all rushed in to help as well...

Well Done guys

Well done Kym... looks a great dirty weekend.

Now Jase can take mud riding master class/food preparation (chocolate) and storag techniques and emergency shelter construction. Truly a man of many talents.

Merry Xmas guys

Good on you Kym

I think it's time to purchase a 'pencil cam' so you can show us some of the riding without having to stop and take photos
Well done on capturing the moment just before mishap!

How many beers did you all buy Jase at the Mount Mary for providing the entertainment?

Looks like you stayed mostly dry - well done. Have a safe and great Christmas guys. We'll catch up sometime soon.

Cheers,

Pete

You Aussies are quite annoying... when it's summer you're riding in beautiful surroundings.. when it's "winter"... you're still riding and attending rallies... and enjoying life on 2 wheels.. I'm sooo jealous

thanks for the report and pics

G'day MB, great ride on Saturday, must admit it was a bit slippery at times on the 625 & I can just imagine how difficult it would have been in the boggy clay sections for the blokes with the bigger, heavier bikes.

Was fun watching a few riders in front of me trying to negotiate some of the very slippery sections, ie. Jase coming unstuck & giving his bike a boot full of throttle to get himself out of the mud.

At his '2nd off' he did a complete 360 in front of me & I had to steer wide to miss his head & shoulders as he came off his bike & landed directly in front of me...... Luckily no contact was made.

I very much enjoyed some of the more technical hill decents along that pipeline road, that was fun.

All in all a great day, good company & the weather held off for us & no one got really wet (one bloke very muddy though).

I will make sure my indicators are fixed for the next ride.

Looking forward to the next one.

Cheers, Sol..

I'm still waiting Pete!

The cheap bastards.

Only kidding, it had to happen, I was having way too much fun and guess what?
It's just as soft as sand to come off in; But it did take all day yesterday to get the old girl back to pre-ride condition.

Waiting for another Big One, good work on the Route Planning MB and great to meet some new faces.

If any one is ever free, I am always up for a mid week ride during my week off .

Hi Guys, saw you lined up at the Liberty Saturday morning, should have stopped and introduced myself, but was headed to the office and had driven to far past, I live at the top of Norton Summit Rd in Teringie, I'm just getting into ADV riding and look like buying a F800GS sometime soon, looks like you had a great ride, was thinking of you when sitting at my desk, don't think I've ridden on anything wet since April 07', maybe I'll be ready for a ADV ride sometime next year. Cheers.

Hi Shark, maybe you could 'cut your teeth' on the below ride. Guys like Masterbrewer ride up there from Adelaide and there are plenty of adventure riding options once in the Flinders. One guy (my doctor) has an 800 on order and is making the trek. You'd be welcome.
