Conecting volt meter to G/S

I'm connecting a stock volt meter to my 84 G/S, and need to know what color wire to connect it to.

In the volt meter- I've got a brown wire, grey and white (ground and gauge light), these are no problem, but I have a red wire which goes to the needle which I don't know what to connect it to in the headlight nacelle. I can't connect it to the red wire which goes to the ignition switch because that is constantly hot.

So where do I need to splice into??

Thanks..
