800 GS inline gas filter?

I am interested in finding out your thoughts on using an inline gas filter on my 800 GS. I use a honda goldwing gas filter on my KLR 650. Works great.

It's easy to put an inline filter on a carburetted bike like the KLR. Cut the line, splice it in and go.

Problem is, the F800 is fuel injected and has pressurized fuel lines. I'd touch base with the techs at your BMW dealer to see if they would anticipate any problems. I'd mostly be worried about the capacity of the filter to flow gas.

No problem putting on an in-line filter. As long the fuel filter is rated for fuel injection as well as all the hoses and clamps. Lots of folks did it on the 1150s to avoid having to pull the pump to change filters. At least on the 1150 I didn't find changing the filter that bad. Wouldn't want to do it on the side of the road though. Takes an hour or so in the shop if you have new o-rings. The installed ones swell and need to dry out so they will fit back. Easier to just toss a new one on.

The 800GS already has a pretty good filter in the fuel injection pressurized feeding system. No need for another fuel filter. That's overkill.

The rational is that an external filter is much easier to change on the road. Apparently one bad tank of gas can clog up the works.

Am I just lucky? Never had that happen on my GS's which have done serious miles in 14 different countrys. I only know 1 person who has had this happen.

I never worried about it either. Didn't get too far into the wilds on my 1150gs but never had aproblem in 80000kms with the filter either. Changed it at 50000kms I think and that was it.

if you want the advantages of an external filter you'd have to remove the pick up filter on the fuel pump. Since it's the first in line it will always clog before the external filter will.

If you are that worried about getting bad gas use a filtered funnel when you fill the tank.
