Talking Hack build x 2

Well I tried a hack, a Velorex that I picked up and put on my GS, http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=424345
This was so much fun that I had to improve upon it. Not only have I become infected with the hack disease but 2 of my friends have also. So The next project is getting under way, we have ordered 2 tubs from Claude in PA,

They were picked up by the trucking company on wednesday and we are anxiously awaiting there arrival. The silver one goes on my 1150 and the black one goes on my buddies 1100GS. I will be taking lots of pictures and posting here as we build 2 frames. So far I have all the steel, heim ends, tube for struts and other assorted goodies. I really waffled on what to do about the wheel and suspension on the hack and we finally decided to use acomplete wheel, brake, shock and swingarm from 2 1985 600 ninjas I had laying around.
Working with Claude at C Stanley Motorsports has been great, being able to bounce ideas of him and getting some great suggestions was a big help. We also had the tubs modified slightly, no door cutout, as we are using the hacks for more of a utility type use. In other words it will be harder for the dogs to fall out.
Anyway I will make up parts list and eventually a drawing of the frame as we build them up.

Thumb They showed up

Okay we are on the move now the hacks arrived in just under one week from Claude and we have most everything we need so we think we can have a roller in 2 days.
Our new babies arrive;

We get to the uncrating;

So this is my silver one goinh on a 1150GS;
This one is for my buddies 1100;

The swing arm does not show up to well but there is more to come. So by now it was beer thirty and to do our creative thing for the build.

So Friday morning we get a good start nice and early.

The frame is 22.5 x 50 inches and the tube the swing arm is on is 34.5 inches long. I will be posting a detailed picture/ plans later on with all the dimensions. The square tube is 1.5 x.120 wall.
these are the tabs for the lower part of the suspension linkage;

This is the start for the lower attachments they will be substantially braced in tomorrows episode.
And this is mocked up so we can get a pretty good idea what the rig is going to look like;

Thats all for now. More tomorrow.

swingarm

I had 2 complete 85/86 ninjas lying around for parts. It is the complete wheel,swingarm and the air assist shock from those bikes. We went this route because it gave us a brake that we could use when we reallt learn how to ride one of these rigs but for right now it is going to be a parking brake. With the original chain adjustment we can now do the toe in on the hack wheel really easy.

Toe In

The thought of useing the chain adjusters for toe in is really neat, let us know how it works in practice. Looks like and interesting project I will be watching.

This has been done before and it does work very well. There are limits of course, moreso with some swingarms than others. Getting the swingarm positioned well and having some initital adjustments at the bike to sidecar area is a good idea.
Glad the bodies arrived okay Tom

Laugh more pics

So we finished the lower mount to the bike and we are going to put a piece of diamond plate to cover them up and to keep you foot from dabbing in between all the hardware down there.

Here are some of the parts we are using, rod ends came from JEGGS, treaded tube ends and the B7 all thread came from Mcmaster Carr and those clevis ends cmae fro Claude at C Stanley.

More to follow.

more pics

So we got both struts fabed all the braces in place, all we need to do is mount the lower end of the front strut.

suspension

Today we will knock out the lower front strut mount and the suspension. I am going to put and adjustable link in so that ride height/ leanout can be adjusted on the road.

almost done

Well the struts are finised and we started on the suspension we anted an adjustable link so we could vary the leanout on the road pretty easy.

here is the toe in adjustment, the swing arm was 1/16 of an inc in beig square to the bike. Wheel lead is set at 10 inches and we ste the toe in at 1/2 inc at the front wheel.

Here she is on her own.

And here first test ride.

So we have to mount the tub and bend a piece of tubing for the front side step but we are close. The suspension feels good on the car and she seems to steer pretty much neutral so we are in a good spot to do the fine tuning when we get her finished.

Fragile?

I don't think fragile is quite the name for it. The square tube is 1.5x.120 the round tube on the frame is 1.375x.188 wall and the upper struts are 1.25x.120 wall. I might put some 45's on the other corners of the frame but that is really not needed. there is still a piec that goes from the square tube on the swing arm to the from corner of the car and the will mostly get a deck for utility use.
