Belt, shaft or chain drive - moving to PNW in 2 months
OK, so I'll be moving to Seattle in less than 2 months, and with this comes the purchase of a new motorcycle - can't wait!
Seeing as how I've only ridden in summer seasons in Eastern Canada, and on bikes with only chain drive, riding in wet conditions wasn't that big of a deal for me.
Now that the bike will be mode # 1 of transport for me (we'll also have my wife's car), a recent RoadBike magazine article on lubricating various bits to lengthen lifespans got me thinking.
Given it's always prudent to re-lube a chain after water crossings, riding in heavy rain, etc., what's the best choice given I KNOW I'll be riding in rain a bunch in the PNW.
This has spun the deciding factors on a bike a bit askew for me, hence the reach-out to the community here.
I'm considering the following bikes:
So... thought from you all?
Are modern chains to the point where simple lubing once a month regardless of conditions gets you about the same lifespan?
I like the Buell...until I see bits shaking while it's idling. :) The cooling fan might be an issue as well, but haven't heard on yet, so perhaps it won't bother me. I recently spent some time on a Buell XB12X idling at the dealer - I liked the feel of it, and the belt drive draws me near... plus it's the hands down winner (IMO) in value for money with the extra bits you get standard like headed grips, etc.
I followed that with a mildly religious experience with the Multistrada and listening to that thing purr...
If chains in the PNW are a frequent maintenance item (moreso than elsewhere due to more moisture exposure), then my list may be shortend dramatically.
I am certain anything on this list will work fine for my style of riding, so it's not like I'm losing with any selection here.
Thus, chain, belt, or shaft for PNW everday riding?
