Any experience shipping your bike?
So I just found out I got a job on Oahu with a tug company. I'll be relocating to the Islands for a couple years. Won't be bothering to ship much over there with exception to my motorcycle. Does anyone have experience with this? What is the best method? The most reasonable? Any input (save for smart-assed) is appreciated. Thanks

Ride to Sydney, go to out to Mascot QANTAS freight service, fill out the Dangerous goods paper work, stick it on a pallet after draining most of the fuel and disconnecting the battery cables and taping them up away you go.
Lucky you.

Hey Mitch-
I like the Quantas freight idea- but what kind of costs should one expect to incur? I'm looking at shipping mine to Europe and/or shipping a bike home (USA) from Europe. |

I would try various Airlines to see if you can just tie it down on a pallet and send it that way, there is no shortage of airlines flying in and out of the US of A maybe one of them will do it. Good luck.

Aha. Right- well thanks for the suggestion anyway! I've been hearing lately that the best policy for a guy in my situation is to buy an overseas bike from an american owner and simplify things. I'm not too picky so we'll see if that works out for me. Just need something that will get me around! I wish there was a forum category of forsale>overseas>american owned That would make the search easier! Or maybe I just missed it? Anyway- thanks for the help!

Went to the USA this year. Bought an older BMW on eBay. Picked it up in Santa Cruz had it serviced by a local guy and rode to Missouri. Left it with friends and sold it again on eBay. Made a bidding mistake with eBay that cost me more than it should have
and their were frustrations with their system and trying to buy in a different country. But had a great trip and would do it again. Insurance was an issue as well till a friend found a company that does temp insurance for us foreigners. Cheaper to hire for short duration but buy for longer. And if your smart maybe vary cheap. Hope to do a thread soon on this trip soon as I work out how. Cheers
