Hello,

I am hoping to make it down here to vist a friend and take in the area. I'd like to find some scenic 2 track to some cool vistas, waterfalls or anything worth seeing that you can't see from the paved highway. I'll be on a loaded 950 so I'm not looking for single track.

there are great roads in this area, but not a lot of dirt roads.

On thing comes to my mind is the "Beauty Spot": a gravel road with a great view. Just ride 19W to NC197 (great twisties!!!) towards Erwin, TN. On top of the mountain (state line) is a parking lot on the right - the gravel road is a very sharp right turn. After a view miles you get to a fork in the road, go right and you'll and up on a parking lot with great views. Go back and turn right to finish the road.

19W is a lot of fun too...

If you go past Spruce Pine you have plenty of long gravel roads:

1238 (past Linville Falls) make sure you stop at "Wiseman View"

1261 (past Linville Falls) Old Table Rock Road

Have fun!

Spruce Pine also has a neat place called "Gem Mountain". My family and I took a little trip out that way and went to Sliding Rock. Gem Mountain is a place you can search for gemstones etc... We found a bunch and got a lot of gems cut.....

Here is a short video of me going down Sliding Rock!

Here is a nice spot to visit too....Grandfather Mountain....

That water was cold as S#it even in the summer LOL.

Thanks for the notes guys. I'm logging them into Garmin Maps to take along with me. DO you know of any good places to stay for the money? I'd prefer not to camp this trip.

Don't know how you're coming down but if you can get down to Damascus, VA turn south on 133 into Shady Valley. Stop at the store at the crossroads, they've got awesome hot dogs. Turning east towards Mountain City will put you on a pretty tight road, think a more open Dragon. Or you can go partway, turn around, and head back west towards Bristol. This is even more open, still good curves though, and when you get to the bottom you can turn left onto Camp Tom Howard road. This will turn into gravel and eventually bring you out onto 19E. Turn left towards Elizabethton and go about 8-10 miles and hook a right 173, run it until you turn left onto 107, and you can hit Red Fork Road that will run you back over the Beauty Spot (This is a must do road). When you get to the paved road turn left on 197 and follow that down to 19E outside Burnsville.

Check out "My East Tennessee" since this was mainly the reason I wrote that report.

Enjoy!

If you go down to Barnardsville and can find Old Stoney or Old Stoney brook Rd. it will take you on a nice gravel road up to the Blue ridge with B-E-A-utiful views. It comes out just West of Grandfather MTN. If you're up for a little hike also go hit LInville falls. Skip all the other trails and do the one that takes you to the bottom. Weaverville on I26 is probably your best bet for cheap chain motels or you can go over to Asheville (lived there for 2 years). nice area to just putt around the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Thanks, Linnville falls is already on the list but now reinforced!

Looks like I may be staying over in boone but that's not far away either.

Thanks again for the input.
