2009 Mauna Kea 200

The forest section of the MK200 was today, about 120 miles for the A's and 80ish for the B's, there's no series style work your way up, you enter "A" and you're an A! Being on light duty still I decided to video and photo some of the sections.

Not too many ADVriders, I think I'm the only one, there were guys from Virginia, California, and all of our islands though.

There was a log in the A section that the B's got to bypass.

Having already completed 40 or so miles this confounded some of the boys:

Look for the foot!

Buddy work became a factor, who ever said Buddy was Half a word?!?!?!?!

OK, just back from a post race party and got a few more to add, the Mountain was dry and pretty freakin fast!!!

A friend's son Ian, #12 was the overall combined Forest and Mountain Champ, IIRC he was fastest in both sections as opposed to best combined times.

About five miles from the finish, 57 total.

# 51, Nolan I think, helped out down in the forest when a rider went down HARD the other rider ended up with a compressed vertabrae, Mahalo for the help 51!!!!!!!

It was the first full two day race in 10 years or so, only about a third of the A's made it through the forest before the cut-off and thanks to some recent mountain road work the fastest finished in the 1.5 hour range today.

The Mauna Kea 200 started off in 1976 as the Bicentennial 200, it was a full 200 miles and was held as a two day time keeping enduro, it's been run pretty much ever since though it was once shut down due to Lava from Mauna Loa in 1984. Kind of petered out in the early '90s after a fatality and then came back as a H n H and only went around Mauna Kea. Last year they added a 50 mile forest section for plated bikes and then you hit the mountain all in one day, this year with 120 in the forest the decided to run the mountain on the second day. Main reason for more racing was the neighbor island and mainland guys, lots of $$$ and logistics involved coming from off island so you need to give them something to do.

Like I said, it's for plated bikes in the forest, there was a rush at Wally World for license plates:

The forest was single and double track:

The logs were makeable:

The mountain section was open to bikes, quads, and UTV's and is mostly fire roads and double track:

A shot of a friend shooting me, film at eleven:

This island has 10 Climate Zones and the MK 200 crosses eight of them Rain Forest, Dry Land Forest, Summer Dry Cool Zone, etc. etc. Sure as hell hope to race next year.......

Answers: Oh Yeah, Oh Yeah, and Oh Yeah.

Dislocated shoulder or broken collarbone, said he wasn't planning on going to the Dr. And a rumored crushed vertabrae, kid should have rolled a hump but probably jumped it, fifteen foot drop on the other side, one mile after the start so Adrenaline probably replaced Reason.

There were some smaller ones here and there and there was a brutal triple log segment where the logs were at angles and spaced too close together to fit a bike between (since I was on foot I didn't venture back there).

That's the thing about the 200 everybody has a hell of a fun time in a masochistic and reflective sort of way....

Who wants to go first????

I'm slowly adding them to my Smugmug, I've been spending most of the time searching numbers for guys, something about being the only guy on the side of the Mountain or the Middle of the Forest with a camera makes everybody your friend.

Well, everybody but this guy:

Results are posted, fastest forest was 6:34.20 slowest finisher 9:55.22, Mountain 1:29.47 and 3:13.43 for the A's.

Really need to get some ADVriders out here next year!

There are maps at MK200.com, it doesn't go to the top though it has in many years past (when you get here I can introduce you to a guy that thought he knew that old route, got stuck, he and a buddy spooned all night at 11,000', and had to have another friend with a helicopter sling their bikes out ). The top is now part Natural Area Reserve and part Science Reserve (telescopes) and verbotten for off-road riding.

If you do it next year you're an ADVrider first!!! Others have talked the talk, none have taken the walk!
