Saturday May 23rd, 2009

I left Harrisonburg at 11AM and rode down through Port Republic and Grottoes. I stopped to take this shot outside Grand Caverns.

Looking the opposite direction with a view of the Blue Ridge in the distance.

I then continued south on 340 to Waynesboro where I filled up at the Sunoco and hopped on 250 up to the beginning of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The weather was perfect on the parkway, a welcomed 10 degrees cooler than down in the valley

I made the first rest stop/photo op at one of my favorite overlooks: 20 Minute Cliff

From here I continued south on the parkway and after a set of corners looked in my rearview mirror and spotted another BMW hot on my tail. We had a spirited little stintthen we pulled off at the next overlook. Beautiful condition R100GS

Some more pictures from the Irish Creek Valley Overlook north of Rt. 60 on the BRP

This photo turned out remarkably nice:

I hopped off the BRP onto Rt. 60 and rode into Buena Vista to get some lunch. I wound up spending a total og $3.50 at the Dollar General for Tuna Salad, Trail Mix for the campout and a Snickers bar. It was getting hot by this point so I turned off Rt 501 onto River Rd for a lunch break under this tree by this flood plain.

After enjoying my little meal, I jumped back on 501 heading for the campout. This shot was taken at the first or second bend in the road towards the James River.

This section of 501 is like a "Mini Tail of the Dragon" with thirty or more twists and turns. Sorry no pictures - I was having too much fun! Eventually I stopped on this bridge over the James where 130 splits with 501. Nice little spot with a power station up on the right.

I continued on to Fontella Rd and came to the intersection with Knight Rd. There was nobody around and no tents to be seen I rode around the area a bit and eventually came across Tim, his DR-Z and trailer.

We chatted and he pointed me to the campsite, located downhill from the road - I just missed the sign

I set up my tent and gear then cracked open a nice Magic Hat Odd Notion and savored the campsite. What a beautiful spot! Opened the cooler and noticed this note from UPST8

In about an hour, Blinkerfluid and Underkill showed up from their afternoon ride.

Eventually we all just hung out down by the fire and unwound.

A little while later, we heard a rumble coming down Fontella and went up to the road to see who it was

Nice Bonnie Rider929!

SV650 and a Maurader

Everyone then set up their tent sites and got their gear sorted out.

Rider929 has one hell of a camera! Underkill: "Hey how do you turn this thing on?"

I was envious of the camera so me and my point and shoot Kodak went off to make our cheap selves feel better.

Mountain Laurel on Indian Run

A local beagle

Blinkerfluid: "All mine!"

Afterwards, most folk went out for afternoon rides and to hit the gas station and food mart.

Blinkerfluid and Underkill

The Nutcracker Suite, Underkill style

Rider929 is OldSkool

So after everyone left, I decided to drink more beer and take some pictures

Nice little waterfall on his property:

Jeff (advridgerunner), Janice and Little Rascal - our wonderful hosts

Some beer just deserves this treatment...

Later on around 4 or so, Greenflyfarmer showed up on his sweet 990.

The man of the hour! Watch that strut...

UPST8 showed up on time as per his note

He then decided to ride his bike to the site to facilitate easier packing in the AM.

UPST8's muddy badge of honor.

Oh the places you'll go with Blinkerfluid!

"Is this a tailgate? No its a chair!" (third time that evening the table fell over)

Hey where's my beer? Time for another ride back to the big cooler!

Darkness slowly enveloped the campsite and everyone took a seat around the campfire. Some had difficulty.

Boot problems:

Nice socks UPST8!

Rider929 to the rescue

After all the excitement, I decided to turn in for the night. Here's my setup.

Sunday May 24, 2009

Sunday morning at the campsite:

Breakfast time as the crew heads out to H&H

I had some Flax, Oatmeal and Applesauce so I decided to stick around with UPST8. Here he is on his way out:

Jeffs interesting setup for watering the flowers:

After everyone returned from breakfast, a ride was in order. The whole lot of us set off for the BRP. Here we are filling up at the BP @ H&H in Big Island, VA

Anyone need a tan? Leave the smokes at home!

"Where's the tanning bed in your gas station?"
"Just go past the Purina Puppy Chow and turn at the Coca-Cola Ice Chest" Can somebody say cancer?

Brian, a local ADVrider showed up at the gas station while filling up. Then as we set off, Greenflyfarmer was coming the opposite way on 501 and made a U-Turn to catch us.

The ride up the BRP was nice with a few sprinkles. Here we are taking a break to admire the clouds nestled below us in the valley.

Nice ride Greenfly!

As we continued, the rain picked up a bit. We stopped at Sunset Field for the rain gear routine. You know, once you get it on, it stops raining

The dirt and street groups split off at the Peaks of Otter. The dirt crew went off a trail on the back side of the parking area while the street crew mistakenly continued on the BRP, instead of going straight onto Rt. 43. Up and down the parkway we travelled for about 15 or 20 miles until turning around and retracing our route. We had a wonderful ride down 43 and quickly noticed the temperature differential at lower elevations. We made a left onto Jopling Rd then turned onto 122 (Big Island Hwy) near Otterville. At one point, Rider929 abruptly slowed down. To my amazement, a calf had broke loose and was standing in the middle of the highway! The group of us sort of herded the calf along the fence for about 500ft until it stopped and we continued on. An interesting looking lady from the nearby home walked outside with a "Here we go again" look on her face as we motioned towards the calf. After stopping at H&H for water and some other items, we returned to the campsite and had some coffee.

I cooked up some Rice and Tuna in my trusty cup:

Meanwhile, the others broke down their tents.

And eventually packed their bikes and headed for home:

Another nice Laurel shot of the stream:

Beautiful ferns surrouned the campsite:

After Underkill and Blinkerfluid returned from their dirt ride, we rode into Lynchburg, actually closer to Boonesboro, and hit up the Food Lion. Got to love the stares of folks as three bikers walk in dressed in funny clothing

We returned to camp and they began cooking their Brats and Beans

Blinkerfluid and Underkill kickin' it.

Underkill: Official Smore Master

Jeff loved his. Just look at his smile

Little Rascal and I:

Night fell and we gathered around the fire.

Can someone say PYRO!?

A nice and quiet evening. I fell asleep to the sound of the creek with thoughts of tomorrows ride home swirling in my head.

Memorial Day - Monday May 25, 2009

After breaking down their sweet hammocks and cleaning up their gear, Underkill mastered the uphill out of the campsite

Blinkerfluid and his tricked out 640

Underkill "Quit taking so many pictures dammit!"

They took off for breakfast around 7. I was left alone to ponder the weekends activities and enjoy the solitude of the creek. Oh and munch on some trail mix(not popcorn but you get the picture)

Take only pictures, Leave only...

Centerstand marks?

As Blinkerfluid was leaving he said "Man I hope we forget something and you pick it up. That would make a great excuse to ride to the Shenandoah Valley and visit you guys"

Little did he know...

He'd be coming west again.

Morning Glory taken as I was cleaning up the campsite and extinguishing the fire.

I had a nice word with Jeff and said goodbye.

I really liked this picturesque section of Fontella Road on the way out.

THANKS SO MUCH to Jeff and Janice. It was great to finally meet Blinkerfluid and Underkill. I look forward to riding with everyone again at next years annual Indian Run Campout!

I'm sure we will!

The cookout is next Sunday - the 31st. Drop by if you'd like. if it rains more, the fishing will not be any good though. It's still really muddy. Needs about 4 more days w/out rain to clear up.

Cool campout. Hopefully many more to come this summer.

I'm just wondering why I had it ingrained in my mind that Blinker and Underkill were a lesbian couple who were getting set to get married and are both naval engineers. I missread/misinterpreted something in the jacket thread and the Hampton VA chatter thread. I had all these senarios spinning in my head as to what goes on on those naval ships. No more late night ADV reading for me...

Anyway see why it's good to meet people in person? Things get cleared up real quick. But I sure would have been surprised when getting introduced to Blinkerfluid for the first time. I think the long hair short hair pics of Underkill are what confused me. I thought she was 2 different people but it turns out I thought she was dating/engaged to herself.
