    I'm in.

Used to have a Silver 2007 Yamaha C3 Scooter but I found that it just didn't have the power for going up the steep hills here in Duluth, MN. It's going to be interesting to read about you going up the mountains out west and how the little C3 performs on such an epic journey. Good luck. C3's get great mileage too (best was 121 mpg for me) and it had a huge under seat storage area for a grocery getter. Traded it and a 2007 Kawasaki Ninja 250 in for a 2008 Yamaha WR250R in June of 2009. Still riding that mostly off road and on some longer local trips on the highways (it's a fantastic dual sport btw) but missed scootering, so just a few weeks ago I bought a 2011 Honda PCX 125cc which does have the power to get up the hills here in Duluth and has a top speed of around 62 mph. The C3 is a great little scooter for bombing around off-road with those big wide tires. I do miss that part of riding it. That's what got me into dual sport riding and eventually why I bought the WR250R which is just a blast. You taking such a long journey with the C3 was for me just too irresistible to not read your saga. I wish you well with your journey and look forward to reading and seeing the pix about your adventure. Ride safe.

the ride to traverse was pretty breezy just 37 all the way up with pretty wide shoulders. i got into town about 3pm but my bud jake didnt get out of work until 10. i went to the skatepark for a bit until it started to rain. i then went and drove around for a bit looking for some of the the campgrounds from last year didnt find any and i was starting to get hungry so i stopped at a little organic farm stand and got some dinner. it was still too early to go to jakes house and wait for him so i decided to head downtown and find somewhere to get caught up on the report and upload some photos. I ended up at a bar called bootleggers. A couple of magic hat 9s were had while all this was going down at one point the bartender was looking at the scoot and asking me about what i was doing and where i was going. He was a good guy and seemed genuinely interested and happy for me. about 8:30 some dark clouds rolled and and the air was getting restless. time to go i rushed around getting everything packed up and while i was loading the scooter in front of the bar he came out and gave me a bottle of two hearted ale! i wonder how he knew it was my favorite? got to jakes and waited for about an hour and a half reading existentialism is humanism until he got home. he made me a bomb ass plate of nachos we had some PBRs and i went to bed. no photos for this day i left my flash drive that had the pics on it in marquette. it will be mailed to me in seatlle so picture when i get there

the drive from traverse was pretty nice all the way to the bridge. there was some confusion with the bridge authority as to when i was coming, apparently they thought that i was coming on saturday and not tuesday but all was well when i actually arrived they were happy to send a truck. no tie downs or anything when the truck arrived so i just layed my gal on her side for a nap (sorry no pic) and we were off across the bridge. its been many years since id been across the bridge, id forgotten what the UP looked like with no cities but towns along the way. highway 2 was beautiful following lake michigan along the beach for most of it and rather chilly as i expected it to be as soon as i got to 117 to travel north toward m28 it was back up into the 80s. 117n was a pretty dull run with mostly farms. m28 was amazing and about 2 miles before superior the temp dropped steadily until i reached munising a small shipping town on the shore of superior the chill finally settled itself at about 30 to 40 degrees cooler than it had been. not knowing how long it would take me to get to marquette due to my by the seat of the pants style and finding out that this place was actually much further west earlier in the day, i told nick that i didnt know if i would be able to make it in one day, but when i saw the sign for marquette in 40 miles just after munising i knew i was home free, oh shit i had forgotten that my phone had no reception. when i check my phone getting into marquette "awesome" i had full bars and nick picked up right away! I was to meet him at work as he was just getting out, and follow him to his and and aurora's place. funny thing about where he worked and where he lived i had driven by both locations while cruising around town before calling him lol. getting to his house he opened the door and two great danes rushed me, fish and stick are their names. fish was not too fond of me at first which was pretty spooky having a dog that weighs as much as you barking from the get go, after 10min we were all best friends. once aurora was home we and the dogs quickly set out for sugarloaf mountain to watch the sunset. beautiful. off to bed shortly after this very full day. Another full day tomorrow as nick told me he would take me rock climbing if the weather stayed good.

decided to stay an extra day in marquette and im very glad that i did. started the day with a very good large roll for breakfast then it was out to ishpeming for some rock climbing with nick. i was terrified baleying nick while he was setting up all of caribeaners that maybe if he fell i would panic and do the wrong thing allowing him to fall to his death. No such thing happened. after he came down and it was my turn to go up. climbing shoes suck they are so incredibly tight on ur feet but nich was right you cant even feel em when ur on the wall. as i was going up i was a little scared of what would happen when i fell, my hands were giving out i could barely hang on to the rock. sure enough i lost my grip and fell backwards but didnt seem to go anywhere, nick had me. he yelled up to me "hang out just like that until your strength comes back" as im hanging from my seat and a tiny rope 50 feet above the ground. after the fall i was no longer scared of climbing the wall. Experienced climber falls to death after his belay makes a mistake, was the headline that kept running through my mind whenever i had ahold of the line for nick. everything was fine i dont think that he came off of the wall once while he was going up. At the end of all the climbing nick had gone three times and i had gone twice. we went and picked up his girl aurora at work then it was out to presque isle and a place there called black rock. the only visible volcanic rock in the midwest. this was place was amazing with the rock jutting into lake superior. later in the summer when the air is warmer people cliff dive and you can just climb right back up instead of swimming back to shore. looks like i know where im going next summer. to the grocery store for dinner fixins and home to cook dinner. after eating dinner we went to a little bar downtown that had a list of all the beer that the bar does. i had a pale ale and a scotch ale both were very good. we didnt stay at the bar very long as aurora had work in the morning, i was pretty bushed anyhow. Did some writing when i got back to aurora's house and went to bed pretty early to get and early start in the morning hoping to make it to minnesota.:freaky

leaving marquette in the morning rush on the main road waspretty nerve racking. northern wisconsin looks just like michigan the ride wasnt too exciting and not many pictures were taken. there was some drama for me trying to find a place to stay later in the day. darkness was starting to fall and i was pretty worried about what i was going to do. this was the first night that i had camped and had not done any research before hand as to where would be viable. i drove about 40 miles total just looking for a spot to lay my head. eventually i settled for a national forest campground. i feel kiknda guilty about not paying for the night but i think that 14$ is pretty rediculous for a flat spot, pit toilet, and hand pump water.

driving next to water all morning was freezing

Found out today that northern minnesota also looks just like northern michigan. didnt take very many photos today as the sky was dark all day and everytime that i was thinking of getting the camera out, some drops would fall.i did get to drive through duluth, birthplace of one of my favorite poets, Robert Zimmerman aka Bob Dylan. i made 200miles ending up in park rapids minnesota. only choosing this place because there was a walmart and i needed to get some dinner. pork and beans sounds good to me. I was looking for a place to camp and looking behind walmart there were some woods that looked promising but there were some employees unloading a truck so the search continued. Drving down a side road a little ways i saw a housing development that looked empty. well it was mostly only about two houses and big patches of the land hadnt been cleared yet. great! drive back into the woods and walk back to the road to make sure no one can see me, all good there. kicked the grass back up on the way to the site to cover the track. setup camp, ate some food, talked to some people, and bed down for a good nights rest.

coming to the bridge into Minnesota

up with the sun in park rapids to be out before anyone would come snooping. decided to go to fargo to see if it looked anything like the movie. Its doesn't they have everything neccesary to be a legitimate town. while i was there i figured id stop and get some breakfast and an espresso. A double please. while i was at the cafe i checked the facebook, to see a post that a friend of mine from highschool, Jay, was in North Dakota for the summer. gave him a ring and the conversation went something like this. jay"hello" me"whats up man" jay"not much just doing some howework" me"what do you have planned tonight?" jay"aww man im in north dakota" me"well shit so am i!" jay"what! no way!" hes staying in grand forks for school. i drove out in a wonderful cruise flat low wind and beautiful blue skies. coming into a small town along the way i hit a road transiton that was rougher than i thought and my rack got wobbly all of a sudden. i looked back to see that a weld had broken on one of the supports. shit. about ten miles down the road there was construction and the only detour they sguggested was the freeway F-THAT. apparently in ND there are no side roads except for dirt farm roads. that would have been fine were the rack not goin to shit. after about ten miles of dirt that turned out to be smoother in most parts than the actual asphalt, the construction was past and it was back to the road. i arrived in grand forks and met jay at the skatepark. we asked around a bit for good places to camp and made some friends in the locals. jay and i went to his dorm sorted some stuff and decided that instead of me driving his speed the whole time a tow cord was in order for his bicycle. we met michael, a local back at the park and he showed us some skate spots around town. He also made a bunch of calls looking for a place for me and jay to camp out and do a little drinkin for the night. we parted ways with mike for a little while. me and jay went to look for backup spots fearing that mike may flake out on us. he came through for us and found us a place to stay in tony's back yard! we hung out into the wee hours of the night sharing stories and talking about the differences in accents.

miles of fence posts with shoes on em? dont know what thats all about

got a very late start leaving grand forks ND due to stayingup til three drinking with Jay, Tony, and Micheal . Jay took me out for breakfast at grandma butterwicks where Jay, Michael, and I all got the radio special. two eggs sausage bacon hash browns and all you can eat pancakes or french toast for 8.25, needless to say i didnt feel the need to eat again until dinner. we said our goodbyes and I told michael that if he ever wanted to come to michigan he had a place to stay. i was off and rode for some miles, the sky was gloomy as usual and i was tired of riding around rugby ND. (randomn fact: rugby is the goeprphical center of north america.) setup shop behind the water plant after grabbing some scrubway dinner. just as i was getting the tent setup
my bud ravis calls to tell me that t-storms are headed my way. well ok nothin new then he says "oh yah theres a tornado watch" but not to worry its for the whole state. the wind whipped pretty good all night but that thunderstorm never did hit.

flooding is bad all through ND

i wish now that i had taken at least one pic of my camp spot. nestled and a small wooded area next to a feild. awesome spot. i did however save the gps location of it. i will edit this post with the co-ordinates. it was a very good stealth camp spot.

slept in pretty good in rugby as i wasnt worried about being discovered in my camping spot along with getting more comfortable with boondocking once again. made good miles for the day but the weather was not favorable for the camera once again and the terrain is flat with mostly just flooding to look at. i did stop in Minot ND and roll through a few different welding shops until one turned me to Minot welding of course. I went down there and they were very friendly and fixed me right up with welding the rack. not only did they fix the broken parts but they laid bead on all the previous welds to ensure that the thing wouldnt break again. the cost, 37 and some change sounds like a deal to me. and all before lunchtime.

I made it to Montana! in culbertson i rolled into the first motel i saw and asked if there was anywhere to camp. angry that i interupted her phone conversation the lady running the place grudgingly told me that the city park offers camping. I wish that all towns allowed camping in the park. as i rolled in i noticed another tent with a bicycle next to it then a guy sitting at a picnic table. got the ped parked and all the gear off then went over to introduce myself. Sadly i cant remeber his name anymore but he was a french canadian boxer that taught american football to highschool students. i got my tent setup then went to the store for some beers to share. we talked of our lives in our own home towns and what our plans were for the summer. he hitchhiked to regina from wherever hes from, bought a bike when he got there and plans to pedal his way to yelowstone, but thats his only destination in 5months and even that is open ended. i found a kindred spririt in this man and his style, also someone to learn from in his traveling style not to sweat the small things an take ur time. we both turned in fairly early as we had plans to be up early and on the road. as i was laying down about to fall asleep a truck went by fogging for mosquitos i thought hell was coming down.

    broken

woke up in culbertson montana the frenchman was already gone. God speed to you man. As i walked to bathroom a coyote strolled right by me on its way to town. while i was in the bathroom i heard the rain come, damn i was hoping to make some miles today, fuck it, looks like im hangin out until it stops. Got antsy and packed up the tent wet, within the hour put on the rain gear and headed west on US 2. the camera didnt come out much due to the it rainng for nearly the duration. around malta i was tired of riding and it was starting to get late along with me being hungry. again first place i hit was a hotel and asked the most beautiful girl id seen since i left michigan at the desk if there was anyplace to camp. i was directed to the city park. Its gettin way too easy to find a place to put my head. erected the tent (hehe) under a pavillion to allow the tent to dry out over night. coming back from the bathroom i ran into some fellow riders although there were on a harley. loyale and ruth were ranchers from alberta canada. they gave me the low down on canadian healthcare. they told me that if you live in a rural area you may wait months for for a cat scan or diagnostic work and you still have to pay for prescriptions. we also talked some about american politics, im not ashamed that they were much better versed than i. after chattin for about 2hrs we called it a night and hit the hay. i was more than ready as i had already drank more than half a pint of vodka and ate my dinner. the night was fairly warm and i fell asleep easy with a sort of roof over my head.

i was rather happy with my setup that night and yes the tent was very unnecessary as the bugs were atrocious.

slept in late and was even a little hung over when i opened my eyes to the day. easy cruising and no wet gear unlike the day before. that didnt last for long as the sky turned dark and started to let its payload out. the sky did eventualy clear out for a little bit. By shelby the sky was dark and ominous again and there apeared to be no place to camp in or around the town. i was exhausted from fighting the wind to keep the bike on the road, so i decided to get a motel room. Glad that i did because while i was outside smoking i saw a GS and a kawasaki roll up and said to myself i bet that guy belongs to adv. carl, the man on the GS does indeed belong to ADV. i struck a conversation with michelle while she was unloading her bike. I didnt meet carl until i got down to the montana club where they were eating by the time that i arrived the kitchen was closed for 2minutes which is a shame because when theyre food came it looked delicious so i had to settle for takeout from the chinese place across the street. we stayed out until midnight or so drinking laughing and generaly becoming friends. how have I gotten so lucky meeting all of these great people on the road?

i woke up about 3 hours later than i had planned to in my motel bed. i blame carl and michelle for getting me drunk and keeping me up late. im not complaining however they're great people and i was very happy to meet them. as i was packing up they caught me, they had to give me a hard time as i told them that i was hitting the road early in the morning and that i would be gone before they woke up. this has been happening alot for some reason. leaving shelby i took some photos of the little town on the verge of the mountians. there is some amazing skating to be had there. the ride that day was also...you guessed it, wet. Not the whole day but there was WIND the whole day. some neat occurances did happen to me carl and michelle passed me while i was going probabyl 15mph against the wind and uphill as i knew that they would as i hadnt left too much before them. as i was driving along later in the day a sherrif passed me then pulled into a vet clinic of the side of the highway waited for me to pass then pulled out behind me. i was thinking whats he gonna do get me for speeding and its not like im probably ever coming back to ND so bring it. nope didnt pull me over but went past me again and down the road a bit and whipped into the parking lot of a grain elevator and as i drove past him i caught him taking a picture of me! hahaha. i was laughing to myself for a good solid ten minutes. i made it as far as glacier national park shouldnt have taken me all day to get there but it was all uphill, into the wind, the drive belt is getting pretty worn, and the weights that i bought to tune the variator are too large so an average of 15mph for the day it is lol. that is until i got into some of the mountains and had some downhill stretches.of 15mph for the day it is. after i would climb the hill for and hour or so. coming down the other side was amazing. next time i come out this way a more powerful bike is definitely in order.

skate spot looking out from my motel room

i had planned to wake up with the sun and get an early start on exploring glacier, but it was still around 30 degrees when i woke the first time, no thanks. woke back up around 8 and starting to warm up along with...rain. packed up and headed up the going to the sun highway. only about 13 miles of it was open at the time due to 45 foot of snow pack on some parts of it yet. after driving and hiking a little around glacier i headed back the way icame on 89 to get to US2. 2 istelf was a gorgeous ride all along the mountains with huge cliffs mountain trains and raginging rivers and nearly always a fall to the death if one were to go over the tiny gaurd rails. awesome! i ended the day in kalispell MT i was a little worried about pushing the ol' girl any further i could smell the belt burning at times from hours of being over maxed on the mountain grades. In kalispell i i drove around for a while and found some spots to camp and all were pretty sketchy. The best one that i found was in the city park right next to a sign that said "parks and rec camp center" it was a decent spot but i was pretty sure that i was allowed to be there. I figured at least i have an argument and vagrancy is usually just a ticket.

this is some of the stuff that i woke up to
