If this is your first post....hello! We are two brits on GS's on thier way to the border for a crossing at the weekend as part of a trip from Deadhorse to TDF. We have taken our time in Mexico and are going to see some people in San Salvador on the way down. Any advice or guidance about Guate will be gratefully recieved.
Welcome, hope to learn a lot from you about your country. I should be down there in Oct some time this year.
Buen lugar para comentar Beto! gsrideruk Guatemala is a very nice place to visit, there`s a law tht requires us to wear a vest, black reflective stripes and registration number but i never use and i have noto had any problems i do not think y have your. Roads are in some repair work but they are usually in good conditions
Hola, Muchas gracias! Guatemala is practically my second home, and I will down this winter for the tenth time. Anybody in the dept. of Isabel? That's where my Guatemalteco family lives. Keep the reports coming. Saludos
Ok cualqueir cosa que nos quieran decir Hi and thank you for posting here about Guatemala, so we want to know more about the laws and rules of the road. So do you need a vest? any color? size? style? only for 2 up? I read something about a NO 2 people per motorcycle, is it true? any other thing? Does rain a lot in July? Thanks Damasovi
Yes Danasivi, rains a lot may-september specially on the coast route is mostly in the afternoon. The vest should be colored black with 2 gray reflective vertical and horizontal stripes and gray reflective license number on the back, the price is $ 20 There are not allowed two people on a motorcycle in the city but is allowed in the rest of the country I do not know if foreigners should carry vest, but I will ask, but it is the best way not to draw attention
Hi: Thank you for all the welcome posts. we will be posting all our riding adventures here, and will try to post all the necessary info about riding in Guatemala. lets start with the positive aspects of riding in Guate. in general people are very friendly and most of us will go the extra mile to make visitors feel welcome. on the negative factor Guatemala is known for having a very corrupt goverment, specially the cops and custom officers. also you should know that crime and violence is very high. but I would say that the risk is worth it specially if you are riding a dual sport bike. this year we open a small bike store in the city, that gave us the chance to meet a group of riders know as the Biker Knights. they are an a amazing group, hard core, extra friendly bikers you can ever meet. about the new rules in guate about wearing a vest and just 1 rider... just play the tourist game and the cops will no bother with you. for the riders going to El Salvador from mexico. al depend wich border are you crossing I recomend coming via the yucatan peninsula, crossing Belize and then using the border in melchor de mencos . is safer and spending some time in peten should be part of your trip, I can advice you more about if need to. well I will try to write once a day. but for sure if anyone is coming this way count with some new friens around here saludos
I will probably be investigating Spanish schools in Antigua and San Pedro. Does anyone know if the roads around Lake Atitlan are safe, compared to last year when daveg got mugged? I will spend five weeks in Guate. I look forward to meeting local ADV riders. Where is the best place for a KLR 6000 mile check up?
Hi: going around the lake is perhaps one of the most dangerous places to ride, around that area there is a indigenous group wich makes a living out or robbing not only tourist but also local riders.the south side of lake atitlan is a no no for a small group of riders or a single rider, specially between san lucas toliman and santiago atitlan. there is a 1000 other options and better rides than going in to the wolfs mouth. once in Guate get in touch with us and we can help you with your bike service saludos
I agree 100%. We recently followed this route (from Belize, through Melchor de Mencos to El Remate) and loved it. Attention: the road from Melchor de Mencos to El Remate is not all paved but totally doable. We stayed in El Remate, visited the most impressive Maia Site (Tikal) and enjoyed lake Peten Itza. Then, we rode to Rio Dulce where we spent one night. From there to Antigua, via Guate City. We skipped Lake Atitlan completely. Guatemala is my favorite country in CA. Good luck.

Guatemal has to station rainy and dry. due to climate changes this rainy season has been marked with low precipitation, that is due to el nino effect. but even with low precipitation for this year the southern part of Guatemala is known for always having wet evenings. saludos
