Test drove an r65 today and really liked it. I am concerned however about it having low power at higher rpms. The left carb is leaking gas. Also the front shocks seem to be shot and the left fork seal is leaking. Are the needed parts available? I really liked the riding position and looks.
Yes. The fork fluid wasn't changed on schedule, kills fork internals. This speaks of poorer maintenance. That is a concern. Leaky carb is classic airhead. Trivial. But again, why hasn't it been corrected? Define low power and higher RPMs? Could be an issue, might not. The compression tells much of the tale, but it is likely out of tune as well. That said, it's a 650 and an old one with a driveshaft eating up power. I would get a compression check and look at the timing w/ a light. Also might have old gas in it if it's been sitting. How much $$$?
$1750.00. It rode and drove. It just seemed to have alot more low end. I am fine with less power but I figure tbe top should match the bottom.
If it went through the gears, buy it...especially if it's an LS model. Under 60,000 miles is a definite buy. Good power anywhere speaks of decent compression. It's running out of poop by 5500 - 6000 RPM try taking out the air filter. Clogged filter will kill high end breathing. Also carb settings and timing can be off. Most often carbs. Somone may have switched the rear end so the gearing is lower on the bottom but the top is past the power band. Long shot. They are a bit of an odd child in the airhead lineup. Shorter stroke, smaller flywheel. Often have a vibration issue at a particular RPM. Many parts that interchange on other won't on the R65. Ditto aftermarket stuff. Different items to fit R65. So slightly smaller used parts market---but less competition for what's out there. Cult following. If seller doesn't know airheads, make a big deal of the leaky carb. mention the problem these have with cracked carb bodies. No fix but to replace. $250 -300 used on eBay. Go for $1500. Then don't ever hit the carb bodies with a big hammer. They might crack. Have hundred dollar bills in your pocket, $1500 exactly. Flash cash and look helpless...."it's all I have man, and If I need a carb..."
It's a 79 so it can't be an LS. I am currently working ( obsessing over ) on a 82 R65 . I spent the greater part of yesterday removing the forks . I was planning on recycling them .. but after I took to one with a chisel .. its toast. When I did get them apart .. they must have been spending a great deal of time with no oil. I can't wait to get it all running again to take it for a blast .. then give it to my Girl Friend for a present. for $1750 for a running bike .. that seems pretty fair.
