Loctite issues are pretty common in this country where many people work in the mines and the pulp mills. They don't want bits and pieces coming off 500 ton haul trucks and paper rolls, so the millwrights (being millwrights) always slather on the green Locktite. No blue Loctite there. Not an issue for them, as they usually just zip cut or gouge everything off anyways and use new bolts and fasteners when buttoning up the job. But green Loctite is everywhere, so guys steal it everywhere and take it home in their bucket. Then they use it on their motorcycles, their snowmobiles, their quads, their boats, their rifles...
Green loctite is medium strength but has creeping capabilities. So can be put on once a bolt is tight already. Reverse of liquid wrench basically
Right now I know two things. This is the bike I'm taking. Probably. Unless I buy a new one before Monday. Who knows. Lol. i did a big trip on a bmw dakar last year, i bought the bike at 10am, with 2000km on the clock, and was on the road by 12.30pm. over 4000km later i was back home. And second, I leave on Monday. I meet the family in Victoria bc about a week in. Spend some time exploring the island and visiting friends then head back. I don't know my route, where I'm staying, what I'm eating and haven't really sorted out packing. I'll be hammock camping. I haven't even decided on the initial direction to the border I'll take. Never mind where I'm going to sleep each night. I'm thinking ill hit Portland, maybe Seattle, and down into Cali. then up to the coho ferry at port angeles to victoria.how I'm going to get to these places i have no idea. where ill stay, i have no idea. i just hope i can find somewhere with two trees 13-15 feet apart that i won't get arrested for hanging my hammock. I just fitted the wolf man racks and bags two nights ago. And I'll load up some ortlieb rack packs on the rear rack and passenger seat, so I should be good for space. fitting the tyres was surprisingly easy with just tyre levers. i was nervous as the shinkos are pretty stiff sidewall. but they went on fine. So completely not following the 7 P rules I'm sure it'll be a blast. i'll just follow the roads wherever they lead me. Prior preparation and planning prevents piss poor performance.
I envy this approach. Being a compulsive planner, not just plan A but plan B too, I keep saying someday I'll hit the road with little more than a vague idea of things to see and when to go home. Maybe I should start small by leaving a few gaps in my next plan in the spirit of flexibility. I do believe that adventures are not what you plan, but what happens.
Hi, new to this thread, just got an inmate's 2012 WR250R (thanks ba! ) to augment my off road riding (currently have a 2010 F650GS for DS duty, another purchase from an inmate). Loving the bike so far as the previous owner properly farkled it and took meticulous care of her. I only recently registered/plated and rode it to work. I still have yet to try riding off road with her. I ordered Wolfman Expedition Bags to match-up to the panier frames bought with the bike (Wolfman for the EB's). And I just ordered some powerlet sockets and soon ram ball mounts to start getting the cockpit ready, the HDB top-clamp is nice (saw some threads on this, helped in ordering accessories). I also mounted a givi top plate so I could use the Monolock case I already had. This thread (and others on this site) was very instrumental in my decision to choose the WR250R as a lighter, more dirt worthy DS alternative to my GS that could still be loaded up with camping gear and hit the highway. Now I just need to ride it off-road!
I'm guessing a lot of you have messed with your built in fuel mixture settings. I checked mine the other day and it was set at 0. Running completely stock I set it to +5 and noticed a slight change in behavior. Slightly better acceleration. I ride around 2-5 k feet above sea level. Does this seem like a good setting? can I up that at all without harming the engine? Where are you running yours? I realize it's no substitute for a FI programmer but it is kind of like cheap thrills.
>"I checked mine the other day and it was set at 0." Lower values = leaner. Higher values = richer. Running at +5 won't cause a problem. You can bump it around from say -3 to +7... see what happens.
So I just went for a quick ride to test the shinko 705 tyres I fitted this morning. I didn't balance them or anything. The front did have the red spot to show the balance point of the tyre so I put that by the valve stem. But nothing more fancy than me spooning it on. And they were perfect. I've ridden knobs or 50/50 tyres on my last few bikes and I forgot how smooth they can be. Peg and bar vibes are noticeably reduced. The shinkos feel great on road, and have made my speedo a little more accurate. I'll see how they survive my trip. But I'm glad I changed them for the amount of road riding I'll be doing.
I'm not doing so hot tonight. What is the orientation of my front brake caliber return spring? No. 9 on the diagram. http://www.servicehonda.com/parts/lookup#/Yamaha/WR250X_-_WR25XXCL_-_2008/FRONT_BRAKE_CALIPER/WR25XXCL_%282008_MOTORCYCLE%29/FRONT_BRAKE_CALIPER_%28WR25XXCL_-_2008%29 Can't seem to put it in right without rubbing the rotor. 250x Thanks
Lol. If only. I haven't packed a thing yet. I'll be throwing the big dry bags on the rear rack and seat and once all packed up I think my bike will end up looking like the bikes in the Far East with 50 chickens and the entire family on it. But it's ok, I'm not new to this party. I've been travelling on motorcycles since age 16. I'm just normally slightly more organised. I normally at least know where I'm going to sleep each night. Lol.
Glad to hear the good first impressions becasue I have one sitting in my garage now waiting for me to find time to install it. Hope your trip shows more of the same. Have fun and be safe.
What air pressures are you folks running when fully loaded with camp gear? Got my first back trip on a wr coming up. Cheers!
I use 32 Rear, 26 Front. I use same pressure for loaded or unloaded. Only change it for offroad when I need more traction, then I run closer to 22 Rear, 20 Front. Run Shinko 244's on mine, but not using it for hardcore offroading (Other bikes for that riding).
D606's front and rear. 18 psi front and rear for everything. It's just easier that way. Or I'm lazy. One of the two.
