It sucks getting old !!! So after spending 5 days on the WABDR last summer and sleeping on the ground I have decided that my back can't do that anymore.I have a GREAT [ and expensive ] REI folding cot but it is to big and heavy to haul on the bike,so I deciced to build a offroad capable single wheel trailer to carry my cot and big tent. I have been collecting parts for about a year and decided to start the build today.I have a XT350 swingarm, rear wheel and shock [ but the shock is to HD so I won't use it ].I bought the steal today and built the box/frame,tomorrow I will build the hitch and mount the swing arm.
Got the swingarm mounted today,I will be working on the hitch in a few minutes. Live life,be yourself !!!!.
It will be open with a aluminum floor..I'm building this to carry my cot and big tent. The box is built around them..40"x17" The start of the hitch. Live life,be yourself !!!!.
I am sure i should know the answer to this, with a single tire, the trailer will have to be a rigid mount to the bike, correct?
Envious of your welding and fab skills. Can't seem to weld to save my life. Would love to find a welder needed woodworking cabinet making help to trade services. Oh, well. Your trailer build looks promising. Do you have a bag to keep your cot clean on the trailer?
Not really. There will be a hitch mounted to the end of the swingarm on the bike that swivels up and down. The hitch on the trailer will hook to it with a swivel that lets the trailer go side to side. Look up Moto Mule on the net and see what I'm describing. Live life,be yourself !!!!.
Just get a cheap 110v welder, some scrap steel and lock yourself in the garage until you learn to weld !!.hehe Yup I have a whole box of 50 gallon trash bags .. Live life,be yourself !!!!.
Breathing the byproducts of welding is bad. Don't do it Taking a course is a good idea too; or at least watching a video course and asking questions here: http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210053
My dad was a welder but I hated it when I was growing up.After he died I started welding, would have been easier with his help !!. Live life,be yourself !!!!.
HA! This is exactly what I was thinking. If it's not enclosed, it'll get dirty! But then again, so would a bag. And you'd have to clean the bag. But NOT if you used Garbage bags. Problem solved. Of course, my immediate though was, forgo the sides of the box and bolt in a pelican case (though that shit is pricey!) So, keep up the good work!
where did you find the swivel hitch that attaches to the swingarm? i will be following along with your build...looks great so far
Is that easier to learn on than a Miller wire-feed welder, and arc welder, or a stick welder? We've got those down on the farm, and self-tought hasn't worked yet. Should have gotten Dad to teach me when that was possible. I'll check into video courses. The local adult ed classes don't have welding, and the tech schools want degree-seeking students.
I learned on a old stick ( which I still prefer for the big stuff ) and then taught myself on a Miller Matic 250,now I use s 110 Lincoln. Live life,be yourself !!!!.
