Huell was a wonderful ambassador for the parks and landmarks this great state has to offer. He will be missed.

I was fortunate to have had a personal experience with Huell. I met him a few years ago on Descanso Beach in Catalina. He was the most gracious and affable man I ever met. Even though he was the "star" he made me and my bro I was with that day feel like we were the big stars. We partied pretty hard that day...Drinks at the bar in the sand at Descanso, Steak and lobster at Steves Steak house in Avalon seated on the balcony watching the fireworks and finally more drinks at Luau Larrys. He really was that super nice down home native Tennesean dude he portrayed on California's Gold. He loved to go out of his way for his fans. Which were suprisingly many considering his show was on PBS. Its a fond memory of a super cool dude.....

My son ended up being on one of his shows. He came to Seal to do a story about our town and was making his way down main st and interviewed my kid. About a week later the phone rings one afternoon, the wife answers and it's HH. He called to make sure it was ok for our son to be on the show and then gave us the date it would be on. The wife chatted with him about 10 mins about absolutely nothing. But she said that's gotta be the most polite & easy going person she's ever talked to.

What a show! He'll be missed.

I never heard of Huell before this post. I watched the videos and he was a very interesting and entertaining guy. I mean no dis-respect by this, but people on the left and right coast seem shocked when they come across someone like this. Friendly, easy going, not full of himself. Just go to the Midwest or the south and you will meet thousands of people like this. Maybe not as talented as Huell, but just as friendly and not full of themselves as this guy was. From what I can see Huell is a good example of what people from the Midwest and south are like.

Well, there was definitely more to Huell than meets the eye and that in itself should be a lesson for all of us. I just couldn't resist imitating his, " that's amazing", line when out hiking with the family. Drives my wife crazy. But highest form of flattery it's said. Won't be the same without him. He made everyone feel just peachy. Enjoy the infinite journey, Huell.

I don't think there has ever been anyone who was a better, more likeable and more entertaining promoter for the State of California.
I will be sorely dissappointed if his tireless work to showcase our State doesn't result in some sort of official recognition by our "leaders" in Sacramento.
Naming a state park after him would make him smile till the end of time.
I will surely miss his genuine enthusiasm. :cry:cry:cry

    RIP Huell

    Regards
    Bernd

...but he left quite a legacy and his memory will live on. Some of my favorites from him were when he did the 5 corners of Calif. and the show on the State of Jefferson. RIP Huell, it was trualy a sad day when you left us. :cry
