Aloha, Anybody know of a place that will spray that nasty s#it in the SF Bay area? I'd like to get my tank and front fender coated. For those who have done this before, any tips on preparation? Thanks! Sasha Pave r100gs 'Fritz' r1100gs 'Brunhilda'
That should be easy to find. I just did it myself with rattle can liner. I have a pneumatic spray gun (not HVLP) that I might try using next time. It worked a lot better on my painted metal tank than it did on the colored plastic. Probably that is what it is meant for? anyhow...prep... remov all decals. if they are clearcoated over you'll have to sand it down and take it off then smooth the area. I just roughed the clearcoat and the outline of the decal is clear as a bell. I just roughed everything else with fairly rough sandpaper. 100 and 220 I believe. deep scratches will show, but the liner coats the 220 roughing well.
I had a shop do mine...I think it will hold up better than the spray can stuff. I didnt do anything but clean and mask the tank..it was pretty rough with big gouges and scrapes
Sheeit. I've already crash tested and resprayed mine. The can stuff holds up reall well. just needed a wee touch up on the fender and hand guard after a gravel slide at speed.
I did lots of playing with the spray on stuff Chop.....its easy to fix..but not even close to the toughness of the "Real" stuff. I havent gone down at speed yet...but my bud dropped it once in the parking lot and once on the trail.....zero damage to liner.
thanks for the advice all :): with the pro stuff, they should be able to spray the plastic too, no? thanks for the shot jimjib! mine is that yellowish/green color so i'll probably have to get around the edges on the tank as well. -sasha
Sasha. Might want to try these guys..Don't know anything about them; but they seem to be the closest ones to you... A-Rhino Linings 480-A Collins Ave. Colma CA. 94014 (650) 755-4637 Joc
my 1100 is a 95 with the plastic tank....and it was screwed up from umpteen falls plus the paint was bubbling up...which they were known to do. Its been on about 6 months now and looks perfect. Sorry chopper...but the only advantage I can see with the spray on stuff...is that it easy to touch up...
Like I care? It's your bike. and if you want to be a wuss boy and have others do the work for you so your skirt wont get mussed, that's up to you.
Oh choppywonconobie....just admit your puny spray can bedliner..is no match for the powers of my superdooper, Linex dura shield pro job. My skirt is never mussed up
a painting party. with all your HOT girlfriends...yummy!!! I need to paint 3 tanks,,and some other stuff, too.
Well Mike for one, he bought my bike and with the gas tank and other body parts looking like they do, I think it's a great idea. Sasha, I've seen jimjib's bike and it looked great. Look for that Rhino lining place one of the others suggested, it's what's in the back of my truck and will hold up. You going to remove the Chilean guardrail imprint in the tank?
Hey Chop...I have gained 20 lbs and cant wear that dress anymore. The one important thing about the pro job.....make sure you actually talk to the guy thats going to shoot it. Tell him you want as fine a texture as possible... as they tend to really glob it on and you lose the nice finish.
And......it only costs a few bucks. Jim's bike does look *very* nice, but my 100 looks pretty darn good, don't it, Jim?? I spent about 30 bucks.
Yes, I like the look of the spray can finish..and its super easy to fix...but it would have lasted 10 minutes on my plastic tank the gas fumes permeating through. ..I really had no choice. It will be interesting to see how the pro stuff holds in a more serious getoff.
I believe the difference in the spray can type and the pro applications is the cans are a laytex and the pro stuff is poly eurothane with rubber granules. There is one home application called Herculiner at http://www.herculiner.com/prodinfo.html that is the real stuff. It comes in kit form and is available from Kmart for about $100.00. It is applied with brushes or roller. I used it on my trailer and it has proven very durable.
Thanks all for the great advice, and fashion tips! Ricardo, I'll give you a ring and I can borrow my friend's truck to haul the body parts down there. I bet we could save a few bucks. MadRussian: if you could see my tank, you'd see that Jay took great pride in leaving a small reminder from everywhere he went on it. Cheap lipstick from Barcelona, Cow brain from Chile, a phone number from a lonely lunberjack in Juno. And that fender has more chips than a Vegas Casino. I'm too cheap to paint it proper, plus I'd just bang it up again. So it's liquid latex time for Brunhilda, it can't get any uglier! :): -sasha
