could be... But there is another XRL owner who has done it too.
I had asked before doing it, just to make sure it can be done.

I have a MEFO 150 on one wheel and a Terra-flex on another... No problems there

Have you tried balance beads? I use them with great success

what I ment is that the hopping might go away with the beads, but I'd like to figure out what and why I'm getting the hopping... ya know find the cause and repair.

You are seeing this "bandaid" solution incorrectly. If the problem is with balance then the beads will reveal it. This will then give you the reason for the problem that you are looking for. The problem will then be isolated and you can then fix the problem. If it isn't a balance problem then you know to look elsewhere. When searching for a solution to a problem I usually first ask myself what has changed between when it worked and when it started and then try to remove the changes from the problem. Is this a thrust issue or a balance issue. If only thrust you won't notice the problem if coasting in neutral. If it is balance or chassis related it won't go away when providing thrust. This of course in only my humble opinion and I don't dare claim any expertise in motorcycle repair.

Quick thought... Is your chain in good condition? If there is a bind, it may cause some pulsing and hop?

Has anyone here actually swaped the lower 2nd from the nx650 (part # 23421-mn9-010) into thier XR650L, I really dislike the gap...

If so, is it worth the hassle? By the way my xr is running just fine right now with 13,500 miles... I have a hard time bringing myself to split the case, because it runs!!!

    I understand ;) :freaky

the hopping happens in gear and costing in neutral... Oh well, there goes that idea.

Chain has about 3000 miles on it, It's well lubed with no see-able problems.

Beads idea: So spend $ so I can spend more $ to fix? lol
I get your point- and if after re-seating the rear tire the problem still persists then I might have to try the beads. Simply because I'll be out of ideas at that point (other then getting another set of tires)

    <---ugh :huh

I hope I don't come across as unappreciative, I am, very much so... But as you can imagine this is driving me nuts and my temper is getting shorter and shorter. Sorry if it's being shown here toward you guys.

I also suspected a stretched/worn chain and/or messed up sprockets on mine when I had the hopping problem ... I swapped out everything (new front and rear sprockets, Regina chain) ... still had the hopping.

Is there an old abandoned or unused road near where you live that you could use to safely test your bike with the front rotor removed?

The rotor has a fair bit of mass, which when rotating can cause the hopping that you're experiencing if the mass isn't equally distributed across/through it's circumference. (thinner lighter spots, heavier thicker spots). It may not be an issue of the rotor visually being warped/out of round, it may be imbalanced (even if only slightly) in certain sections, which would explain why it only happens at lower speeds (revolutions) and evens out at higher speeds.

That's my theory of why replacing the front rotor on my bike made the hopping disappear. :deal :beer

You've still got the use of the back brake as well as using engine braking.

Just trying to help you save some $$ and headaches to rule out what turned out to be the cause of the front wheel hop on my bike. :beer

I've read of several guys over on Thumpertalk who've done it. They were very happy with the results, but only you can decide if it's worth it.:slurp

I have that in my old '93 "L" that is parked in my garage awaiting a rebuild. I have probably 18-20k miles on the gear and it a great mod... I wish I would have added it on my latest motor build. I forgot about it, ugghhh

I raced that bike in Hare Scrambles for 3 years, have ridden to Copper Canyon and all over Northern Mexico on that bike with the gear, no problems at all.

Honda should have included it stock
