i acquired a 2005.5 Adv S from a friend, and it had a really bad turning radius. the bike could not turn around on a 2 lane road...

i checked the steering stops, and there was 1/2" of thread showing. on each side. i adjusted them to 3/8 showing, and checked for clearance both directions. nothing hits, and there is at least a 1/3" between the fork and headstock. i took it for a ride, and there are no issues going full lock and i can turn around much easier.

is there an actual measurement for this? why did they come from the factory this wide?

Maybe to keep new riders from a tank slapper if they ride with no hands.

They set them befor the plastics go on. You adjust it so your fork tubes don't hit. Use a piece of card stock as a feeler gauge.
