Thanks for the offer. Good luck with the ride. I'd be interested to know the route you guys are taking.

I'll just be following a bunch of guys who I'm hoping are not going to lead me into someting I didn't want to get into. Donks & Co. are really good off-road riders. I've got less than two years off-road under my belt then back 20 years to a teenager on farm bikes and mini bikes. But I'm happy to send you a Garmin GPS track log of the ride when we get back? I managed Mount Coree, most of Webb's Ridge and Gentle Annie on Sunday, but baulked at Powerline. It was still the most difficult off-road I have done on the Dakar. It's a strange feeling coming up a road that goes down so steep you can't actually see it before you are going down it. And the melted frost and residual puddles from the weeks rain on the red clay with a worn out rear tyre made things very interesting going up some of those steep little hills.

You'll have a great time on the ride down the coast. There are some tricky spots, but half the fun is pushing yourself past your comfort zone. Having other guys there that ride better than you is a great way to watch and learn and they can help you get out of trouble when you find it.
Have a great ride, and I'd love to see the gps track when you finish. |

After Badja FT, down Woila Ck to Belowra and on to Nerigundah, and then zig and zag into to town, avoiding the st, of which there is some good stuff down there. Sunday will be back into the bush up Wadbilliga, maybe via Peak Alone, if we can get through, and then Numeralla, Inaloy to Jerangle, and then into Tally and onwards north. Although none of the planned route is hard or technical, beyond perhaps a couple of very short sections of G3, there are very few transport sections, so cumulatively, it can wear people down, but we have options. No guns, but likely to a be a knife available if you need it. Or it might be another route........... Its a min 300 km fuel range and bring lunch both days, and organise your own bed at Narooma. We are staying at the park on the beach and will liely be fed and watered at the Golf Club up the road. This is nominally a DSMRA ACT ride, but I note its not on the calendar as such. I haven't been organising it, but if someone is keen to join in, I guess it'd be OK (subject to confirmation). https://www.dsmra.asn.au/index.php |

Hey Donks welcome home. Saw your pics and write up over in the RR. Bugger about the tank. Saw Benz the man of steel yesterday arvo when he came over to pick up his gear. He's looking pretty good considering. Reckons he'll be right by the TTT.
Not looking good for me rally wise until then myself. Cheers Fati Sent from my iPhone using my thumb |

We kissed a couple of dune crests on the QAA which I didn't think much about at the time. When we setup camp about 30 kms west of Poeppel on the French Line I gave the car a once over and spotted a drop on the underside of the tank. Barely a pinhole where a internal baffle had been welded. We suspect an over penetrated weld. We were almost past the point of no return, so I decided to keep going and monitor. By Dalhousie, the next night, it had opened up a bit and I estimate we'd lost maybe a litre or two all up. Attempts at bogging it up weren't too successful. It was no worse at Mt Dare. Our plan had been the Binns Track via Old Andado but I decided to head directly for Alice via Finke and the Old Ghan. I called the tank maker, Brown Davis, who had fitted the tank in their workshop in Melbourne on 23/05. The first top up was in Booroowa on 02/05 enroute to Cobar after leaving Melbourne. 1400 km range is handy. Brown Davis were concerned. I thought they might have a local agent in Alice I could talk too about a proper repair, but welders it seems are hard to come by in Alice ATM, they've all gone mining, and up to 5 days was the estimate to fix it. So I bogged it up again and we decided to slab it to Melbourne with a few diversions and get Brown Davis to fix it. Kept the level low, and the leak was stable. They made a new tank and swapped it out instead of patching. They plan to cut it up and figure out what went wrong and will advise in due course. They gave me a Scan Gauge, about $160 worth as some form of compensation, and a promise of discounts on other stuff I may want, so can't complain about their service at all. The Old Andado and Plenty Hwy will have to wait for another day, maybe 2 wheels next time. I could argue that I did the Simpson on 2 wheels anyway, I had 2 and Sandra had 2, but I doubt the argument will stand up. And I have no interest whatsoever in riding a laden bike over the Simpson. Its 650 Husaberg country for me. Kudos to those that have and do though, but I'm too old now. |
