Hello, this kind of thing may have been done, if so I apologize and please direct me in the correct direction. It would be nice to get a record of everybodies total mileage on their KLR. Mine is a 2008 with a total of 14,000 miles
1995 - ~50,000 miles on the day a Ford Explorer took her out 1999 - ~130,000 miles (had to replace the speedometer a couple of times so do not know exact mileage). Currently rebuilding a 1992 engine and will be back on the rode this spring.
2009 with just over 18000...I have to keep the average at 1000 miles/month or better or I go into withdrawl..
I know the Pres. of FSSNOC has a KLR with 135,000 + . Rode just about every state with it. His Son is riding it now. Thump-On!!!
34000 on my odo,but I've had to repair my speedo a couple of times. I went 5 months without it so I would guess my 06 has 40000 or so.
I've got a 06 with only 20k on it...these 100k + posts are unbelievable. Part of me wants to do the 685 kit on my bike, and part of me wants to just see how far I can take the stock engine. damn, 100k is alot of miles on a single cylinder dual sport. Thanks for posting and sharing those big mileage numbers....
2005 with 14000. a 2000 with 70000. Havent done the Dohicky yet on ether, but maybe this summer............
I've had the 685 kit sitting in my garage for about a year, and I'm trying really hard to adhere to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." approach. My bike runs great, doesn't burn oil, and is really smooth, so I might just leave it alone. I'm going to do a compression/leakdown test in the next few days to get an idea of the engine's condition, Those results will give me an idea of whether or not the kit stays in the box for a while longer.
I have a 2004 with 62k miles, and just picked up a 2003 with 8k. That strategy is what I'd planned all along, to stay with the same make/model bike in order to keep the mods I like. The '04 is still going strong, but a lower mileage bike will have a greater chance of being more reliable on a long solo trip.
2000 mdl.22,000mi.trouble free.I wonder if the high mileage ones above have had any problems or what is high mileage for a KLR?
I have a 2008 with only 10,000. You hear guys whine about the KLR but you don't find many bikes that put that many miles on without problems. The best part is they don't cost much to buy, run, or fix. How can you beat it.
My 08 is sitting in the garage with just over 13,000 on the clock, going into withdrawls though haven't been on it since October
For mine, I gave them a gentle, respectable break-in and at 6000 went to a top quality full synthetic (Mobil 1 20W-50). After that all I did was change the oil and oil filter every 6000 miles, at which time I also checked/adjusted the valves. Cleaned the air filter as needed (use Twin Air and NoToil filters with NoToil oil). Stock doo. Front side of doo hickey after 130,000+ miles Back side of doo hickey after 130,000+ miles But I did loose the spring which allowed enough slack on the balancing chain to let it eat into the cases This also caused serious hooking of the balancer chain sprocket on the crankshaft, which with my anal approach to rebuilds makes this engine toast, and why I got a used engine to rebuild.
There must be something wrong with you. You own a KLR and don't spend all your time working on it and re-engineering it. I thought I was the only misfit that spent his time riding instead of working on it. You even run your oil close to what Kawa recommends. How am I going to make money on my oil stock if you don't change your oil every 2000 miles?
