I've had 14 bikes over the years and nothing over 650cc has gotten 50 mpg or better in US gallons. But my KZ550, DL650 and LS650 all have. Anyone have a bigger engine bike that gets 50 mpg or better?

Specifically, the last one I owned returned 55mpg regularly.

    It was a 1994 model XLH883 Sportster.

Can confirm, my Buell 1203cc usually comes this close to 60mpg (often frustratingly at 58-59mpg)

    Basically a super-Sportster...

Got it geared up 18%, turns about 3000rpms at 71mph but I usually cruise 73-77mph

Riding to Deals Gap and back this past spring on my KTM 950 Adventure she was returning 53mpg consistently on the highway, in the left lane all the time, with dirt gearing (down 1 f, up 3 r).

My 750 Aprilia Dorsoduro can squeeze out about 50 mpg, but usually gets 45 when I flog it and carry panniers.

-1 tooth up front, and +2 on the rear sprocket.

One of my friends has a Honda 919 that gets 50+ routinely. Another has an R1 and once on a long highway trip he got 50 but had to really try.

My Dr650 is getting me almost 55mpg, helps to weigh nothing at all and not carry luggage though.

If I'm not too heavy handed with the throttle, I regularly get 50mpg with my 5th gen Honda VFR800. And it has over 100,000 miles on it.

My CBR600F4i would cruise at 55mpg +-1 on the highway at 70.

My CB250 Nighthawk would get 70+ in steady cruise, drop to around 50 if I was in stop and go wringing its neck the whole time.

The FZ-1 would snuggle up to 50 if I was behaving.

Weighing 160, being short (air resistance) and having a steady throttle hand help a lot.

My '74 BMW R90/6 (900cc) would get 50 mpg all day long when ridden gently. Went down to 45 mpg when I pushed it.

R1200RT will get 50 mpg provided I keep it at 65 mph or less.

If I beat it mercilessly I can push my 750 Shadow down to 50mpg, usually get 53-55 around town and commuting, with a best of 60 on steady highway. Loaded for a camping/fishing trip I get about 54. I do tend to ride like the old man I am, which suites that bike.

Third from the left. No, your other left.
Many of the bikes listed already are chain drive. Mechanically, chain drive is more efficient and the rear suspension lighter. As a couple have mentioned, with a chain you can pick and choose your gear ratio.

Way back when I toured for a summer a Kawasaki 550 LTD carrying soft bags, a backpack and a couple other bags. Aerodynamic I wasn't. I has reduced the rear sprocket by 2 or 3 teeth, lowering the highway RPMs a bit. I was routinely getting 55 mpg on any mix of highway and city, and hit my best 72 mpg cruising at a very steady 80 mph.
