Installing an Acewell speedo/computer on an airhead --

I bought the analog tach model ACE-4454AB priced at $330, http://www.acewell.co.uk/Acewell Speedometers/ACE-4xxx/ACE-4454AB.htm?action=full&id=41 , and got the speed sensor ACE-S11. Total cost was $382, shipping charge was less than $52 (there was currency exchange fee, too).

I made an Acewell/Ignition switch mount.

Looks like a clean solution for those keeping factory tree and risers, especially if they have a RT or RS and need an ignition key mount.

If you use factory headlight and ears you can put ignition in left side of headlight bowl. Just pull the big plug out if the left side and move the switch and carefully reroute all the spaghetti....

It seems like most folks are using aftermarket headlight mounts when building a cafe racer out of a boxer. This also works well for the G/S and GS guys as the ignition switch is in that area stock. This afternoon I will have a product that fills that large hole in the side of the headlight bucket with an 8mm threaded hole in the center for a mirror or the same hardware that is stock on the right side.

I am planning out the wiring for my installation.
Scanned the microscopic wiring schematic from the owner's manual. Now I zoom in and actually read it:


Labeled all the stock wires by their function, i.e., turn, neutral, oil pressure, etc. :


I have labeled all the Acewell wires to match up to the BMW wires:


Notes: I have the Acewell 4454 and this installation is specific for the 4454. I made some additions to bpeckm's wiring instructions, making them more specific to the 4454.

I have a Word file for the Acewell 4454 wiring instructions, modified bpeckm's instructions. How do I show a Word file in this post?

Now, to cut, mate, and solder the wires:

Cool. I have a several files: bpeckm's wiring instructions, my additions to bpeckm's, acewell schematic, stock ' 75 BMW wiring, etc. I will email 'em to you.

Chris, this is in reference to "charge" light on the Acewell. I understand how the charging circuit works on the stock BMW and how the generator light works in the stock instrument cluster. I do not have a schematic of the Acewell internals, so I don't know how its charge light works. Would I be wrong to assume that it functions just like the stock BMW light?

It does function like the stock set up which I believe on the stock harness there is a second black wire that is hot with the key on that is the switched hot for the Acewell. I have to look at my drawing I did for the last one I wired up.

Yes, the switched hot (key on) is the green/black wire on my bike (may be a green/blue on some bikes). I will test the blue wire (BMW harness) connected to the Acewell "charge light" wire. Thanks for the input.
