So I scored a 3100 mile 2010 990 engine with the harness, dash, exhaust and everything needed to do a swap on my super enduro. This is a big swap for me but I am excited and was wondering if anyone else has done this. I know Powercell has but haven't found any write ups on the topic. The engine should be here next week with all the other parts arriving later this week. I did consider just using my carbs and converting the 990 to carbs but really like the idea of FI with added mileage and power. Ill post updates and photos and would like any info the OC gurus have to offer.
Easiest solution is to swop the timing wheel and cams into the 990 motor, rest is plug and play. I think PC kept the 990 cams. What bike is the motor from, ISTR SD and SM have different ratio gear boxes
Yes for more power and like the idea of better mileage from the FI. Also building a bike that KTM should have made in my opinion sounds fun. I like to tinker and always seem to need a project.
I would love to have a FI SE but don't want all the added plastic. Are you adding the faring to your SE? Not sure what you're trying to do here.
I have full harness and everything needed to do FI. Also running the Powercell tank which if my memory serves me correct has provisions for the fuel pump.
I guess I'm kind of confused on your question. I'm simply going to install a fuel injected 990 into my SE. Hope that answers your question. No added fairings.
For maybe 15 hp on pretty much only the top of the revs? I wouldn't really expect better mileage. Mileage is more in the wrist than fueling. These bikes are all over the place in mileage, carbs or FI.
When I rode my '05 950 back to back with a '10 990 Adventure (R mapped) the difference in power felt huge. My '05 is well sorted and taken care of but the FI 990 was so instant and crisp if felt like more power all the way through the rpm range. This was before the days of the CPR filter as well. I'm sure that will boost the power of a 990. This will be one sweet build. For a bike that will see most of its miles in Baja I cant think of a better machine out there!! Can't wait for you to share the write up.
I think I'm the only one on here that's actually tried all three on the SER: CV's, FCR's and fuel injection... and I can say without exception that FI is an enormous step up from either of the carb solutions. Responsiveness is the biggest performance gain, but ease of starting and increased power are also significant. As for fuel mileage, any changes are insignificant... .
