Based on the advice here, I think I will do this trip in mid June. Two weeks should give us enough time that we won't be rushed, and can explore off our route when opportunities present themselves.

I have just about firmed up my loop, and it looks like this:

Lots of driving. Should be a good tour though. Be careful in Asheville, you might get confused and think you are back in Cali.

Tourist trap and eat up with unfriendly police. 20 years ago ok, not so much now. It is pretty, but...
For my own part I'd consider staying on the BRP all the way to the end (Cherokee, NC), then run up to Clingman's Dome in Smoky Mtn Nat'l Park. It's free, quite a few visitors but not commercial. The view is better imho.

Asheville... Yeah the commie pinkos are trying to take over, but for your purposes there are several brew pubs available to make it through one visit. Biltmore House is expensive. Before I retar'd I had a job for several years hauling tractor trailer loads of garbage from Asheville to the dump down here. Saw a car with an aging (i should talk) hippie br er woman in it, the old Audi was held together with bumper stickers. I passed and noticed one that said 'Hate Is Not A Family Value'. She passed back and I saw one that said 'The Road To Hell Is Paved With Republicans'. No hate there

Several BBQ places in Greensboro - Stameys seems to be most popular.
Natty Greens' downtown is local brew pub well worth the visit. I'll buy ya a beer.
Lexington NC is the bbq capital of the state, at a minimum.

Not sure I'd recommend visiting Raleigh or Greensboro area, probably a waste of vacation time. Wilmington, Beaufort, New Bern, Asheville area will better uses of your time.

There are so many generous offers from you guys. I really appreciate it, and look forward to meeting some of you along the way.

I've got another question about motorsports. I talked to a guy who lives in eastern Tennessee, and he mentioned seeing posters for a week long motorsports festival happening later this year. He said there would be truck pulls, mud drags, drag racing, and a bunch of other stuff.

I cannot remember what it is called, since I didn't have a pencil to write it down. I'm not sure it is in TN, but it is likely close. Anyone know what/when it is?
