Met up with The Rider and Geoffster this morning for a ride up Bailey Canyon Road to the 173 up to Lake Arrowhead. This is the Palm Ave exit off the 215. About 200 miles in total.

Here's The Rider and Geoffster chatting it up at the Starbucks on 40th/Waterman. See, I ride a GSA and insisted it be a Starbucks.

Here's La Morena. Thanks again to Rider914 and Giant Loop for the sweet tank bag.

    And here's Geoffster's sweet G6Fitty XCountry
    [IMG]

We came across this downed tree and it looked like there was no way I was getting my fat pig through it

But I did. Here's Geoffster making his way under the tree...

Nice view looking across the valley towards Saddleback

Do I need a new rear tire yet?

I'm still thinking about the KM ride in august, assuming I can get enough finished on the house AND that space is still available at the last minute.

I'd love to do the Mendo rally if Dean/mootsuno, etal. put it on again next year. :freaky

And, if you guys are heading up to the lost coast, I would love to be in on that ride. My wife and I drove the lost coast in the truck last summer and had a great time (but we didn't complete all of Usal Road because of ruts, etc.) We did find a couple of camp sites on the way up Hwy 1 that don't require all the reservation nonsense and (from driving the majority of the route) I got an idea of what it would be like to ride that stretch.

Although my experience is about a decade behind, I am fairly sure that there are no open routes from 33 to E. Camino. Juncal Rd & Divde Peak OHV both head that way, but Juncal Rd/5N13 is gated on both ends (at Camuesa Rd/5N12 to the west, and at Matilija TH to the east) and I don't think that Divide Peak goes that far OR is very friendly to most dual sport type bikes.

The only open route from 166 in New Cuyama that I am aware of (portions of which may still be seasonally closed) is Cottonwood Rd/Bates Cyn to Sierra Madre/Miranda Pine/Colson Cyn (I drove this in the truck about 2 years ago). This puts you out near Santa Maria. None of those other backcountry routes from 166 or 33 are open to motorized travel as far as I know - never have been I don't think :dunno

9N11 (Santa Barbara/Big Pine Rd) sounds like it might be do-able on mountain bikes (since it bisects the two wilderness areas) but I don't think that motorcycles would be allowed on the middle section of this route. You will likely hit gates right as you enter the Nat'l Forest on 9N11. (See the multiple gates noted on the map):

    http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/forestvisitormaps/lospadres/south/02.php

If this is a bushwhack/ride-around-all-the-gates sort of route, then maybe you can make it, but I wouldn't encourage anyone to ride on closed trails. From my experience, the Paradise Rd/Upper Oso to Little Pine Mtn. road (Buckhorn OHV/9N11) is usually open in summer, but I'm fairly sure that it dead ends (locked gate) not far past Little Pine Mtn. The section that passes between the two wilderness areas has not ever been open to motorized travel as far as I know. (see gates on map):

As always, a call to the district office can help to answer any questions that you might have.
