Were getting close to heading down to Baja and was wondering if anyone has been to San Francisquito lately? The main reason is to see if they have gas to sell, as we will be headed south from there on a 135 mile ride that comes out south of San Ignacio so I'm thinking gas will be needed. any help would be greatly appreciated!
I was there about a year ago and you could get gas out of a container from the guy who runs the little camp...but I've heard he closed down. There are, however, two gas stations in Bahia de Los Angeles and you should be able to get wherever you want on a full tank from there. Johnnydarock
We didn't make it out that way last time. Enjoyed your last trip report to Baja. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=843088
Thanks for the coments guys! Bgunn, thanks for the thread link. It looks like in mid October it was occupied atleast! Last year when we ran through there we ended up getting gas at a ranch west of there pretty close to a big intersection. the place was really clean and well kept up, does anyone remember the name? I was talking to Stickman and he seemed to think they might have a facebook page?. It would be a good option if San Fran didnt have gas.
Thanks for the info guys, but we wont be headed out through El Arco or Viscano. the route we are taking heads due south along the coast without any gas for about 140 miles. It pops out just south of San Igancio. I'm thinking we might be ok since we each will have about 6.8 gallons of gas which should give us at the low end about a 300 mile range. but would love to fill up at San Fran just to be safe.
Here's some info for you: Rancho Piedra Blanca 14.9 Piedra Blanca, a ranch and guest resort offering accommodations, meals, guided tours, and more. In just about 10 miles the peninsular divide is reached with a view of the Sea of Cortez and the many islands offshore. This was once the top of a very steep grade called La Cuesta de la Ley (The Grade that Rules). However, it was totally re-graded in the early 1980s so 4WD is no longer needed. 26.0 Bottom of Cuesta de la Ley. 33.0 El Progreso, ranch. Road east curves to the left, road to El Barril forks to the right. 33.6 T Junction: Left (west) is road to Bahia de los Angeles, access in 1.5 miles. Right is main road east. 33.8 Rancho Escondido road right, tourist services offered. 44.7 Gated entrance to Cala or Puerto San Francisquito ahead, turn right for Punta San Francisquito Resort. Soon drive along airport runway on dry lake bed. 46.7 Punta San Francisquito Resort. Damaged by recent earthquake, but open for business (meals, rooms). Guest rooms at Piedra Blanca. Here's a pic from a ride completed in October : I'm heading down there February 15th through the 25th, will be heading to San Francisquito as well....
Easy, just stand in the middle of the little crossroads and start hollering "Gasolina Nessecita" Expect to overpay
Thanks Magoo! good information! I remember the place you have pictures of there from last year! Throttlemiester, I'll try the hollering trick! here's a link to a ride report that goes through the trail we will be taking. I guess they call it the hidden trail or Malcolms secret trail. should be fun!! http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/baja-2010.8807/
I think I know that trail you are talking about. I rode it about 7 years ago on a DRZ. Back then, route finding was a bit problematic, lots of dry washes full of baby heads, nice tight single track as well, epic riding. Unless things have changed, expect a very long day. It should be an epic ride. You should be able to scrounge some gas at El Barril south of SF as well. Suerte!
Great! I can't wait to get down there! We have a pretty good gps track through there so that should help. We will be bringing light weight camping gear as well so we can always stop for the night if needed.
Last March when we were at San Francisquito just at the "T" by the landing strip where you turn right to the restruant turn left.Just up the draw a local was selling gas out of a large above gound tank. that he kept in his shop. Keep an eye on him though, and make him pour the gas into a gallon jug first. He tried to short me.
Just an update here, we made it to San Fran, and they do have gas, even had dinner and breakfast! Also you can get gas from Pancho at San Rafeal. Camping was $15 beers $2
Throttle meister, I'll have to post pictures when I get back, I'm on my iPhone but the place is still really ran down. It was funny the kid running the place was spending most of his time on Facebook. They had sattelite Internet out there. It looked like his project list was pretty big! It is really nice out there though!
dozer Did you run the coast route from SF to San Ignazio ? I am thinking of doing that route in March and was looking for an update
