KINGSLEY: <o></o>
This is our first riding report so please bear with us and we hope you enjoy. <o></o>
Our story begins when my wife, Karen, upgraded from pillion to her own bike. I believe this was done mainly to humour me and ensure against being left behind on future trips. I had been complaining about the weight of all the gear and another load that seemed a little heavier on every ride.<o></o>
In hindsight I believe I have bred a monster, whose appetite for adventure riding will demand a varied menu. This is a situation that both delights me and leaves me a little apprehensive (and broke!). <o></o>
Anyway this is not my story so I will do my best not to interrupt. If I do butt in it will be in self defence and under the AMI heading (Alpha Male Input). <o></o>
KAREN:<o></o>
As much as we long for the good old days which are soon gobbled up by marriage, bonds, parenting and other scary things we may be have to force ourselves to take time out and be a little irresponsible as a battle against mid-life crisis. We finally reached a point were we had time on our hands and decided to turn some of our dreams into reality!<o></o>
Earlier in the year we cut our teeth on a few trips down to the Wildcoast, enjoying the scenery and experiencing the adventure riding and camping scene. Irresponsibility reared its beautiful head and April 09 found us pitching tent and eating lousy food on the banks of the Thambalakhan, Okavango and Kwando Rivers in Botswana. I think we were in HOOK, LINE and SPARKPLUG !<o></o>
As with most drugs, MORE IS BETTER. So, doing some gravel travel through Namibia in December 2009 had a certain appeal offering a more demanding adventure for two old toppies.<o></o>
Herewith our winning formula for a successful adventure through Namibia.<o></o>
1.BIKES: One 25yr old, well travelled Tenere and a less experienced XT600 with only the Wildcoast , Botswana and Caprivi to its merit. Each bike expertly fitted with homemade top boxes which I was assured would stand up to the heavy loads and varied road conditions L<o></o>
2.RIDING GEAR: Much indecision on riding gear eventually settled for the standard hiking gear low on protection but easy to wash and wear. The whole image lacked bling but made for comfortable, cool riding.<o></o>
3.CAMPING GEAR: Dust off your Splashy Fen equipment and youre all but there. Not forgetting day/night temperature changes, spare gas, extra water/fuel.<o></o>
4.FINANCES: Holding back on 2 months private school fees is a good starting point. Believe me, coming home with no cash certainly turns a holiday into a real adventure.!<o></o>
5.A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOUR JJ<o></o>

But on a more serious note, after months of planning and preparing on a limited budget the general idea was to trailer the bikes up to KEETMANSHOOP, discover the back roads whilst heading north to the KUNENE RIVER, checking out RUACANA and EPUPA FALLS then looping back down via OPUWA, OMARUNGA and PURROS before experiencing the thrill of travelling south down the SKELETON COAST and then heading inland from WALVIS BAY to SESRIEM, a visit to DUWISIB CASTLE and finishing off our 3 week trip back at KEETMANSHOOP.

[FONT=&quot]Arrived at the QUIVER TREE REST CAMP shortly after 8.00am, Monday 14 Dec 09, after an exhausting sleep in the front seat of the bakkie at a quiet petrol station in Karasburg, ( our introduction to Namibia!).

A cheeky warthog was harassing the border collies and little meerkats popped up every now and again. Set up our little camp on a very sandy patch.

This is a huge area of various size boulders somehow placed one on top of the other, resembling building blocks

Tiredness and heat started to take its toll and no amount of ice cold liquid could quench our thirst not even WINDHOEK!! What a relief when the sun started setting and the heat was replaced by exquisite sunset scenes from the Quiver Tree Forest behind the campsite. The San used the bark and hollow branches from these trees to make quivers for their arrows.

Fortunately the ablutions had a little afdak and we quickly rearranged ourselves and tent next to the ablutions. We both managed to remain calm and stay friends as this was only the beginning and we still had a loooong way to go.

[FONT=&quot]Awoke at 5.30am and tried to make some sense of the chaos around us after last nights wind.

Finally we get to start our bike ride through Namibia.<o></o> <o> </o>

Leaving Bethanie was the start of our gravel travel. Initially I thought Namibia was a bleak, harsh and barren country. Flat , dry and very little vegetation even the windmills didnt work but then theres no water around either!! At this stage I saw very little beauty in the place and had decided that the creator must have been in a very bad mood when he made Namibia. Its hard to believe that 3 weeks down the line we would both fall in love with the ever changing landscape.

Riding behind, in Kingsleys dust, gave me the opportunity to witness him doing some `sand ballet (short legs doing long strides) in an attempt to save face. HELMERINGHAUSEN was a refreshing place to stop for a cold coke and lull yourself into a false sense of well being. By 1.00pm the glare off the pale roads was quite stressful on the eyes and I started to misjudge the road surface becoming careless and riding too fast. Finally a sign advertising warm beer and lousy food caught our attention and we headed for the offending MALTAHOHE HOTEL only to discover refreshing drinks, delicious food and pleasant company. Decided to treat ourselves to a night at the backpackers which was cheaper than camping at a nearby guest farm.

Set off north on the C14 with renewed confidence and enthusiasm and headed for NABASEB. Roads once again nice to travel if you can avoid the gravel build-up. Had our first sighting of wildlife. Some very nervous giraffe took to the horizon with long, lanky strides while the springbokkies showed off their `pronking abilities and the baboons shyly faded away into the sparse bush alongside the dry river bed. You have no idea how flat, flat, flat the country side is. Anyway it was great riding next to Kingsley again and rather amusing as he had a nose plug of some sorts stuffed into a bleeding nostril. Being on the wrong side of 50 and riding in extremely hot conditions can take its toll on some people.

The rest of the ride on the C24 took all our concentration and we stopped several times to drink warm water and revive a numb bum ! Trying to find a shady tree was something else. We decided to change our original route plan , which was to continue on gravel to Windhoek, as riding was slower due to the different road surfaces and headed for Rehoboth. We rode through an interesting pass which had a `post-armagedon look about it lots of scorched looking boulders with an ashen terrain. At this stage tiredness and a lack of humour prevented us from taking any photos (sorry now).<o></o>

Yhay!!!!!! Rehoboth is a colourful town- all the houses painted different colours. It looked rather attractive.<o></o>
Arriving at MONTEIRA was a relief after riding on the hot tar. It had a lovely little patch of green grass on which to pitch the tent. There was a meerkat on a leash , rabbits hopping around and even some field mice were cruising around the divine pool area. Finally another hot day ended and a cool evening descended and all was well.

Set off at 7.00am hoping to avoid the Windhoek traffic. Because of the time factor we didnt take our original route on the C28. Instead headed north on the B1, bypassing Windhoek and on to OKAHANDJA where Kingsley had to recharge his bikes battery after being stopped at a road block for riding with no headlights. Here the people werent very friendly or helpful and only after a few stops did we get help.

Where quite relieved to ride the last of the tar road and turned off 24km after USAKOS onto the D1930. Yhay.. on the dirt! ( didnt think I would ever hear myself saying that ).<o></o>
<o> </o>At the D3716 turn off we visited the little stalls displaying a beautiful assortment of semi precious stones. Being a collector of such stones I was in my element and had great fun bargaining with all the ladies down the line and found space in my tank bag for a few more pieces.
