Ripper, it worked. Now to do the story Have been building a carrier sidecar for my GSPD for the last few weeks. Andrew2 put me onto this section, and am glad he did. After looking, and drooling over all the threads, and photos, I decided on a rough plan.:eek1 I have a habit of doing that I have driven it once so far, and am now trying to finish it. I will post photos, and more info as time permits(gotta go to work )
Looking really good there Johno.. Bloody A2 has a lot to answer for hasn`t he?? He`s costing me a fair amount of my wifes money as well..
Ummm... blame my young fella,I built mine because of him. Looks good Ian .Keep posting photos mate. A2
Jeez Nev, what are you building??:eek1 I started by making the front upper, and lower mount. I made a bar to connect the 2 frame down tubes to spread the load, and strenghthen the frame a bit. Then used the front lower engine mount bolt, after removing nerf bar, and sidestand.
I used the centre stand mounting points, and made a bracket to come off muffler mount bolt, and upper rear frame mount bolts for rear mounts. Drilled out holes a bit bigger. Hope it will be OK.
Made up a swing arm and shocker mount. Probably a bit of an overkill, but what the heck. Using a front wheel off a Truimph Sprint ST.
Mounted box, and am in process of making guard. Not the flashes SC, but no big cost so far, and if I like it, I will probably make a better design. It is only a carrier, so will do the job for now. More as I do.
Thanks Dave. it is a 1990 model. Had 27,000ks on it when I got it. I have done 8,000ks so far. still working on the rig. Have no real plans, just adding bits as I go along:eek1 ( you can tell) Maybe looking at getting an aluminium box made for the front section. Have a mate in the welding/fab business who doesnt mind helping me(I hope ) On another subject(sort of), has anyone thought of running an alternator off the hack wheel to charge an auxillary battery?? I thought with the sus electrics of the airhead, maybe an idea.
Johnno, try SuperCheap, they have some good metal tool boxes for decent prices. Check out Chris McCardles "Tuck Truck" for something similar. I made a timber box for my old Kwaka outfit but am going down the same road as you for my GoldWing outfit. Good idea about the alternator, I don't know anyone who's done anything similar. Good luck with it all
Looks good. If you make the boxes flat, you could lay a swag on there and be off the ground. What's your 'approach' clearance like? I've just discovered mine can be a little lacking
Not really looking to go bush, but the lowest point is 200mm, and the front is 300mm. Most other 250-300mm. This is no doubt going to be a trial for me, and if I get hooked completely, I may design, and build something else. I like what 3legs has. This one of mine will have minimal invested in it, as I have swapped, scrounged etc most bits, so if it doesnt work, no big loss. The main thing is for me to get used to it, and see if it is a long term addiction I have good support from the local sidecar maker, who are keen to see more around, so their help has been great.
Here is apicture of a wheel driven altenator. This was on a road going rig so clerance was not an issue. It is a one wire GM unit and was the only charging system on the whole rig. Stacy Goff did this one and ran it for years with no issues. It spun via a v belt. The drive pully was quite large. I had seen another one run by friction off the sidecar tire. Never got to talk to the owner though. I plan to do one on my peronal rig when we get around to it (ugh) but it will be mounted above the swingarm.
Getting used to it. Need to check my settings, and maybe put some weight on it. Otherwise, not too bad.
