On a normal year the trails open for memorial weekend. Best is to call Cannell Ranger station for current status just prior to a trip up there: 760-376-3781. They used to be willing to patch you up to Blackrock but last year no one was manning the phones, the info-station was closed. I've forgotten the area manager's name up there.

No big storms this year so expect it to open on time. 2011 it didn't open 'till fouth of July. Mid-June we got to KM store on a road ride over Sherman Pass and had to turn back. They said there were 800 trees knocked down and they had been clearing for months. I had never heard of conditions like that up there. We've been riding the area every year since it opened after the huge Manter Fire of 2000. It was closed for 2 years.

For any interested, Chris Horgan of SOS might put you in touch with the trail team boss and you could get some early rides in scouting trails for clearing and maintenance. They ride them all before they are open to the public. With funding cut backs that seems to be increasingly more difficult for them to do. They do rely on volunteers where possible.

Chris has his trail days in the Piutes coming up too.

Gee, gotta get those damn fork seals fixed on the yammer.

I've done trail maintenance up there before, I was on ranger Bobs team. He worked us like cheap whores on a Friday night. I think he was paid per tree cut.

KM sucks. Whooped out or rocky crap with dust all day long. Even the jeep trails are crap. Plus it's a long ass drive and there are no services. Lord knows how far it is to the nearest Starbucks.

I'll be there from 7-1 to 7-7 at Troy Meadow
