Who,s old enough to remember the peep hole on the camshaft of xt500,s to show you top dead centre? One kick if you followed the routine.

a few years ago before he passed on and willed it to dad, my uncle had a few and tried to see if his 900 SS was louder then dads MHR Mille, went to kickstart it wearing thongs and didnt quite get it to TDC.

nearly flipped him over the bars and practically cut his flip flop in half. he couldnt walk properly for a few days and dad had to start his bike for him haha

i've still got my TT600. it would just about start by hand. last trip on the KLR, the clutch switch fucked up and i couldn't even bump start the bastard. thankfully i convinced the starter to work. as above, a kicker is only a drama if location or problems conspire against you.

I like the peace of mind and simplicity of kickstarting and I believe it makes you a better rider in the technical stuff. I ride my XR650R wherever anyone else rides, knowing full well that if I stuff it up I will be punished. The second worst scenario for kick only is, like some of you guys say, clowns that want to stop every 5 minutes. The worst scenario is sweep riding on tough rides. Stopping to assist every 200m in sand / mud / hills / rivers for days and days sound like fun? I love it with a passion. The best self-test around. Makes the beer taste better.

I still ride my TTR600. I have been working away in WA and last rode it 3 months ago but she still started up 1st kick this morning. The trick with any kick-start big bore thumper is to learn the vagaries of starting your particular one hot, cold and any temp in-between. Ride in Eildon tomorrow.

Although, looking at a DR650, will be a bit of comfort after the 400. west.jpg

Yeah, spot on, you definitely have to think more in difficult situations.
Either pick the right line or hit things just a little bit harder.

the Kicker gives me the feedback as to my bikes health...a bit more effort mean somethings a miss....but I like my E button too!
Never however have only the E but not K !
Random pic of 2 kickers (me on the right) and an E on the Simpson last year...[IMG]

I use the kicker on my XR and WR. Once you have "The Knowledge" you're fine.

Still to be honest there are times when a button would be nice on the XR.
