Hello fellow riders in the PNW, I'm new to the area and was gonna check out the Capitol State Forest this Saturday August 17, 2013. I was out there last week and left a fair bit unexplored. Could use a riding partner...

I am planning to be at the Rock Candy Mountain Road staging area around 0900 to 0930.

    If interested, let me know!

    Thanks,
    Eric

Wish I could get out there. Did you find the gps enabled PDF map WA state forest service posted on their website? Pretty cool stuff.

You won't be lonesome this weekend. The Tacoma Trail Cruisers Smuggler Poker Run is going on both Saturday and Sunday.

    http://www.tacomatrailcruisers.org/smuggler.html

You might consider taking part and get a great introduction to the area with some help to bail you out if necessary.

+1 on the smuggler run!! What an awesome event. It's one I don't often miss but this year I'll be at the alt-rider hoh rain forest ride.

Yes for sure. Justt get there early and they will swap you out. If you don't have a 655 mile range on your current tank just bring a little can to throw on the gas truck. But yes the long course is the way to go.

Stupid smart phone... you'll need a 65 mile range for the long course. NOT 655 mile :rofl

How rough a ride is it? All single track boulder gardens and bottom pits of mud? Or can an old guy with moderate riding skills do it on a DR650?

If you're talking about the Smuggler Run, couldn't tell you - never done it.

If meaning the Capitol State Forest in general, there's a mix of stuff from wide open Forest Roads to pretty single track, with double track and quad wide trails in between.

Its a little mix of everything but quite a bit of quick flowing sections . The last two years I road the long course. I completed it in about 2hr and 45min. It was nonstop haulin a**

If did not rain for 2 months your DR would be OK. But most of the ground up there is rock infested red clay soil, when water is added it is slick as snot. Not to mention all the trails are trashed. Capital use to be a pristine single track area to ride but now all that is left is riding in the two tracks of quads. With the recent rains you would be hating life on the DR at best.
