I'm in the middle of my first oil change on my new to me 2005 950 Adv. After using 5 old t-shirts, 5lbs. of kitty litter, 1 roll of paper towels, and a can of contact cleaner to clean up this mother of a mess, I forgot if there was a crush washer or an o-ring on the oil tank drain plug? Orange Crush please HELP!!
+1 Copper washer. Replace or at least flip it. Once I forgot to replace it and development and a slow leak in Moab. Had to put a new washer in, on the side of the road with my finger on the drain hole, and hot oil of course. Lesson learned.
dont forget to heat the crush washer up with a propane torch to a nice orange glow, quench with water and re-install.
Swells it a bit and makes it malleable so it crushes again. Though I just reuse the old one as is with no issues. Crush it, Max
+1 on heating the crush washers with a propane torch and quickly cooling them off in water. I have been doing that with the same washers for the last few oil changes and have had zero issues/leaks. Quick, easy, and free...can't beat that!
Its called anealing it reduces work hardening of brass and copper and some softer alloy steels. You don't have to go full orange,,, just wait for the bloom of hte color change then quench, Dave
You don't have to quench it, but you can handle the washer right away. Heating to red is required to properly anneal copper. Every time you reinstall your drain bolt, that 'crushing' process hardens the washer, so heating it to soften is a good idea. Every time your reuse your washer it will get a little thinner & wider, except for that, you should be able to reuse it indefinitely.
