I know this has been covered a bit but my question concerns clearing the pillion seat. There seems to be some difference between the various rear racks in terms of how far forward they go past the forward mounting bolts. Can anyone verify with me that the following don't cramp the rear seat? TT; MOD; Black Dog (new); Alt rider. The SW Motech seems the smallest and ends more or less at the grab rail. The Alt rider seems to come the most forward. Or are they all fine? Thoughts? Thanks!
I have a TT rack on my 650. There is at least an inch of clearance between the back of the seat and the front of the rack. Most of the grab rail is exposed as well.
MOD rack can go in 2 places. Rearward clears the seat. Forward it goes over part of the back of the seat.
MOD. No question. 2 positions and top quality. Easy to adjust between the two positions, takes about 10 seconds if you remember where you left the allen wrench.
So far I'm liking my AltRider rack on my F800GS. See the photos here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=18035797&postcount=5 I can easily get the seat on and off, the AltRider rack never interferes.
As others have already said lot's of room with the MOD Top Rack in the rear position for taking a passenger. That was tested back in the prototype stage way back when and approved by my co-pilot. In picture form: Rear position: The handles themselves are almost completely open too. (early prototype shown here). The positioning of a Givi/Kappa Monokey Top Box ( and then later SW-Motech Trax top box) was also taken into consideration making sure the passenger has enough space. This is the forward solo position: Helps to centralize the load when you're riding solo and takes only a minute to switch it. It's still no problem to remove the seat when it's in this position. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, Dave
Just email sales@motooverland.com and they will sell and ship it to you directly, at least that is how I have received my rack, plate and foot and I live in the US also.
I have had my MOD rear rack for almost two years now. It's a great rear rack. I have moved it forward and back and forward again at least 30 times. I move it back when my wife rides and I move it forward when I ride solo. It is as good as new. Lots of tie down places for my rear bag. Very solld. On a side note, I also have the MOD skid plate and it is the also best that I have seen. Great coverage and comes on and off easily for oil changes.
That's a great looking rack. Seems a good mix between the functional size of the TT rack and # of slats/holes on the MOD. Might have to ditch my TT rack and get that one. What quick release gear is setup on there right now? I've been looking for a QR setup for my top pelican case.
That's exactly why I bought the AltRider rack over the MOD rack. I love the function of the MOD rack, but it looks too utilitarian....great for a KLR or DR, but not if you want to try and build off the lines of the F800GS. The AltRider does just that, with a more aesthetically pleasing form and plenty of function. The quick release gear you see on there is the Givi Monokey mount, for my Givi E52 Maxima top case (for city commuting). For dirt trips I will swap that out with the Rotopax fuel can mount.
Hi Dave! You can try: Northern Colorado Eurosports http://www.coloradoeuro.com/ or SoloMotoParts <cite>http://www.solomotoparts.com/ </cite>They both may have some in stock. You'll have to email or call them. :huh Pelican's are pretty utilitarian no? The MOD top rack blends in really well in real life...ask anyone who owns it. I don't think it's utilitarian looking. You can't even see it's there from the side! IMHO of course The function of course of the charts... We changed the game. Thanks for the compliments everybody! Dave
Personally I think the utilitarian feel of the MOD rack is due to the design in that it's not curved on the sides like the TT or Altrider. It extends out further in all dimensions and is not shaped along similar axis as the other racks. Functionally it can't be beat, and the forward and backward options are awesome. However, not everyone has the need to move the rack around that much and prefers the shape over the size/options. I don't always ride with a box or bag on my rear rack and it is those times that I prefer the rack to not look so large, aesthetically speaking. Additionally, as it's been mentioned previously, I couldn't find a US distributor where I could buy the MOD rack online easily. I hunted for about 5 or 10 minutes before thinking "well, the additional features aren't enough to make me spend more time looking around. I'll just buy the TT rack." -- ease of online purchase goes a long way in our immediate satisfaction e-commerce society. Had I been able to find the MOD rack in my initial attempts I would have bought one.
True, you have a point, though I don't always have the Pelican's on my bike. I should say that I'm not hating on the MOD rack, in fact for a long time it was my first choice and I spent a week debating buying that versus the AltRider. Just comes down to personal preference in the end.
