what oil is everyone using?

I have used the Rotella syn 10/40, thought it a little too thin, my clutch didnt like the V-Twin Mobil 1 20/50. So far for me, the dino 4-stroke M/C Castrol 20/50 has worked the best, and used less oil between oil changes. Ive never used the Motorex 15/50. I started using Valvoline 4-stroke dino oil in an old Ironhead Sportster Im building, but too soon to tell... Just my 2 cents. BTW, I like oil threads, knowing something an be gleaned from them.

I'm keeping an eye on this thread, I do oil changes on my 525 every 3 ride and the 990 uses three times as much. At 18-19 a liter I wanna find a cheaper alternative. I'm leaning towards Mobil 1.

The one thing I have always feared from non-motorcycle oils in bikes was the friction modifiers and their effect on the wet clutch.

I plan to use the Motorex until all of my warranty is gone, then switch to Mobil 1 10-40 racing formula.

Been using amsoil for years in all my rides,but recently picked up a Terra and the recommended oil for it is Castrol 4t racing oil.
It looks similar to the motor ex in the fact the oil is almost colorless,which I like because you can look at it and actually tell how dirty it is....if that even means anything......and I can get in 10w50


At the asking price it ought to be good.Just like to find a cheaper supplier.The local dealer gets the same price as the internet guys..

I use Motul 5100 10W50. About $50 CDN for 4l, so a few more bucks per change, but I figure it's worth it to be on spec. - haven't found anything else available locally that meets spec. I use Motorex in my 690 - it's only a couple of litres so what the heck - neither the first or last 20 bucks I've wasted - and I like the container! ()

5w40 synthetic is in-spec per the owners manual for winter temps.

In summer I splurge for the 10w50 stuff.

Motorex 10w50. Though I will be looking into that ELF oil someone posted earlier. Their oil works extremely well in VW TDIs going up to triple the factory drain interval. (continued oil performance verified with UOA, something I will start doing with my bike eventually) Mobil 1 makes an excellent oil (it is all I run in my TDIs and recently sold Diesel 4runner), but only being able to find their stuff in a thinner-than-spec viscosity worries me in a climate as warm as central texas, especially in a type of motorcycle with known oil pressure issues at idle.

My personal decision is to ONLY use specifically motorcycle-rated (JASO-MA or MA2) oil in my bike. Both because of the wet clutch, and the significant shearing effect a combined transmission has on the engine lubricant. MA/MA2 oils are designed for both of these features.

Motorex/Motul is to KTM, as chrome is to a Harley.

Wolf's Head is still only $1 at the Dollar General store! Great stuff! And their chain and bar lube is working great on my chain too.

For the answer, go get some oil from a recycling station.
