Aussie made 640 ADV rallye stylee bashplate thread

No comments at the moment from me just some pics I have of different style's. I've been thinking about these since a toolbag on the rear rack kept smacking me uo the arse:eek1 at Condo.

This would be a cheaper carbon one if you wanted light weight.

I guess you tie your tool rolls in behind it. I won't be going for this style I don't think.

This would be my prefered option at present, but bolted on, and with a tidier way of secureing the lids. And petcock protection.

Buy one, off the shelf, ready to go. $1000+

Seems to be a bit of interest in these so I thought it might be worth attempting to get some made locally to avoid the $1000 price tag from KTM Sommer (plus postage and import duties:eek1 ).

The story so far:

I'm interested in getting 2 sets made as I intend to a long trip and want the increased protection (particularly of the fuel valve) and storage space for tools etc. The factory ones (KTM Sommer) are available with either 2 tool boxes or one tool one water (to meet certain rally reqs - Dakar anybody?)- personally I'm more interested in the tool boxes.

I contacted a few local fabricators who showed some interest, however given that we sell a relatively large amount of ADVs in Oz I figured that an existing aussie bashplate manufacturer might be interest so I emailed a heap of photos to Whipps alloy products a couple of months ago. they showed some interest (ie didn't tell me to f..ck right off ) but I've been a bit buzy lately and haven't followed it up any further.

So...who's interested?

I figure the options availabe are:

try and convince Whipps theres a solid market for them (and hopefully large scale production makes em cheap )

try and get em made by a fabricator locally (might be a lot of work in this as we would probably have to supply plans etc)

get a group order from Sommer? (this option is may be a bit bit too expensive for my blood )

Thoughts? Feelings? Inclinations?

PS as a noob I have yet to get my pic posting shit sorted out, anyone feel like posting a few pics of what I'm talking about from the above threads?

I have merged the two threads, so for you that have just started to read this thread and wondered why it sounds like two threads to this point that is why.

Darren Wilson was making a Rallye replica bashplate / tool box / water container for himself and a few of the Dalby Moto staff a couple of years ago. Not sure if he is still working on them but if you contact Dalby Moto they might be able to point you in the right direction?

Rhys , we have had the big fellas made with toolbox and water tank as the early rally was, except for a cost of about $1200, the supplier was not real excited about them at that.

So that looks like its a no go.

I was talking to Dalby Moto today about some other stuff (they do a nice soft pannier rack for the 640) and mentioned the bash plates, apparently they have had a few enquiries latley -wonder why? .

Wonder if the increased interest may make something happen in that direction?

I thinking about arsing about with some cardboard to see if I can come up with a simple design that will reduce fabrication costs to a minimum - bit like in one of the other threads I linked above.

A bloke I work with made a two toolbox version. Ryan Squires (Youngun640) currently has it on his 620. I am sure he could do them for about $300. This first one was the proto-type.

Petcock (has to be a joke in there somewhere) protection is a furphy IMO. Pull the petcock out, put a blanking plate on, T into the balancing fuel line that goes from the RHS side to LHS side lobes of the tank with the pipe that goes to the carbie.. voila, instant petcock protection

Upside
1. minimal cost (blanking plate needs to be made and T piece for fuel line)
2. superb protection
3. KISS

Downside
1. Perhaps lose a very small amount of fuel storage (not draining from the very bottom of the tank
2. Can't think of anything else.
