There's nothing better then running the many awesome paved roads that criss-cross the VA/WV... except maybe running all the awesome UNPAVED roads that wind back and forth over the state line. :) My day started at home base: Star Tannery, VA. I fired up the bike and headed SW along the stateline mountain ranges. My first run over the state line took place west of Edinburg, VA. I had placed a tag along this road from the NW VA tag game here on ADV http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=568965&page=200 and was curious to see if it had been grabbed yet. At least that's the excuse I used to go riding today. LOL. I got to the tag spot and no one had visited yet. Hard to believe that with this view, no? I then proceeded west over the mountain towards Mathias, WV A quick run thru Lost River State Park and then I pointed the bike south. The road I was on would jump me from WV to VA and back several times. I always get a kick out of this entering VA sign. I then headed NW towards Peru. Along the way I ran into a fellow coming the other way. We chatted for a bit and I asked about the road ahead since we have had a fair amount of flooding in the last couple of days. He told me he had gone as far as the "block house" and the road was open to that point. And so it was... :) After a quick pit stop I proceeded on my way. Hmmm what is that I see on the other side of the stream crossing? Yep. I shoulda brought a smaller bike, or a chainsaw... I pondered for a bit... hate turning around! Then I noticed all the construction materials at hand and proceeded to get to work! Whew, success! Last thing I wanted was to highcenter the bike and flip it on it's side and down into the ravine. I might have been stuck there for quite awhile. Free of that obstacle I was on my way once again. Once I got to Peru I headed south and then made my way back east towards Bergton, VA. I then made my way down towards Fulks Run, VA and headed west. I'm easily distracted though so I made a quick detour north. Having satisfied my curiosity I go back on route and headed south for the long run down towards Rt 33. Back to civilization, time to head for the shed! All in all the my route led me just shy of 200 miles and took most of the day, in no small part due to stopping for pics so much! Hope you enjoyed them. :)
Thanks all. Twohawks, I know, right? LOL. I think part of it is just having the pictures back to back and seeing the sights compressed into a short timeframe. Also, me taking the time to actually look around more than usual. Most of the time I'm bopping down the road and focused just on that. Would be cool to get a small group of us out to make a day of it. The SM-T does fine in most places though I don't think I'd try to take it through Dunkins Gap and the like. I have a smaller KTM and the DR-Z for bigger rock ledges and deeper flowing streams.
Sorry, no tracks. There aren't many roads crossing the VA/WV border up here. I just look for the faint squiggly lines on Google Maps and then find connectors from one to the next running parallel to them. :)
Dunlop D616's. I like'em for mixed surfaces. They stick great on asphalt and help keep things moving a bit in the dirt. The rear is a single compound though so it's not a great commuter tire. It goes quick if you're not using all of the tire.
I have a collection of tracks I keep on Basecamp, May not be all the same stuff but there is a lot there. PM me and I can send you some.
I love the bridge you built over the tree. Even though I hate turning around also, I don't think I would have ever thought of that. I've been on some of those roads for sure. Thanks for the report.
I enjoyed your report. My great-grandfather left Virginia after the Civil War and I have often thought that it would be a great ride to explore the back roads in the area he came from. Have you heard of Biller Hollow, near Timberville?
Small world. :) Billers Hollow is about 5 miles from some property I own down that way. Been past it many times. If you make it out this way I'd be happy to play guide.
