    Hi!

I will be picking up my "new to me" 1996 GS next week. One of the few things it needs, or maybe it's me:D, is crashbars. Where are the best prices? I'm just interested in basic bars, nothing fancy. Thanks!

I have the BMW bars on my 95 GS. They have been tested quite a few times and have worked well. My only complaint is having to remove them to change the oil.

H&B's offer good protection but on my partners 1150, I had to remove them at service time to get the valve cover off & on. Cover needs to go on square to the head so that the plug seal seats properly & this was hard with the H&B's in place.

We both use Wunderlich 'bars with Stanton Headguards, no need to remove or loosen them off to access the valves.

I love them on my 95 GS. I do need to losen them to adjust valves, but I do not have to take them off.

I have a set of Touratech www.touratech-usa.com crash bars on my '961100GS. Easy mounting, good protection, they don't interfere with removing/replacing the valve covers and you can un-bolt the bottom supports for EZ oil changes.

    The 1100GS's are awesome bikes!

Congrats on your "new" ride :clap

Reasonably good, mine have taken some very serious hits and they're still intact. The lower brace mounting scheme is a bit cheesy, I've destroyed more than a couple of the rubber mounts. Valve adjustments simply require a loosening of the bars, not a complete disassembly. The downside to them (so I understand) is the front mount over the alternator belt cover doesn't allow the mounting of an Ohlins shock. I do know it makes removing the belt cover something of a PITA.

I have BMW OEM. I would not recomend them. I have to take them off, competely, to change the oil. I don't have to take them off to get at the valve covers, but they don't protect the jugs very much at all. I've dropped it hard enough to break the plastic covers.

If my crash bars are going to be a PITA, I'd rather have them actually, like, protect something.

HB's look toughest. They're on my with list. Maybe somebody wants to trade?

Hepco Becker on my 1100 too. I can just get the valve covers on/off without removing mine. I have to take out the bolt at the front for the cross piece to get the alternator cover off. I can even leave them on and remove the gearbox :D

+1 on Hepco Beckers, they work great on my 1150 and don't have to be removed to fiddle with valves or anything. Damn, I need to hang some big nasty lights off those things! :evil

    GSbiker,

I am surprised that you have to dink with the crash bars for an oil change!:huh Is this statement accurate?

Is true. The bars anchor to the bolts on the bottom of the skid plate. You have to lift the tank far enough to reach the two bolts and then drop the bars. I have been thinking about cutting the bars and making a joint in each side to correct the problem.

+1 for the Wunderlich Bars. No hassle servicing. Just make sure that BMW Santa Cruz double checks that all the hardware ships out with the bars. Some hardware was missing when I received mine.
