Well, the 910's are discontinued for this year. The 520's continue to be sold, however, most customers would likely see them as already "protected" with the grill that's attached. Your point is well made though arethustra, we'll send a lens off and get the die made. This die would work for the PIAA 40, 510 and 520 series lights.
There are lots owners of 910s -- which don't have factory guards available as far as I know -- who would be interested. Me, for one
The problem with putting film on the 910s is that the lens is convex. I just don't see how it would attach well, unless the shape of the film matched the shape of the lens. I tried it with the really thin stuff (20 mil?) and the really thick stuff (80 mil) and neither worked satisfactorily. Perhaps something could be made up in titanium?
I just spoke with the folks at X-Pel and they have confirmed that the PIAA driving lights exceed the maximum temperature range for the protective film. The lights that work are either head lights with sufficient space between the bulb and the lens surface, or lights that have a front shroud like the Xenarc X1010 HID. So, sorry to those of you (includes me) with PIAA 910, 520, 510, 40, etc who could benefit from a product like this.
How about with some absurdium???? Good point on the convex part...Maybe somebody like AeroFlow will come up with something that works someday...Until then I believe I recall reading that we can still get lenses for the 910 from PIAA?!?!?
Would this mean that it would be ill-advised to use this film with a stock headlight assembly fitted with higher-than-stock-wattage bulbs?
I spoke with the folks at X-Pel and they say go ahead and use it on the headlamp as long as it doesn't exceed the temperature of the stock bulb or exceed 300 degrees Fahrenheit on the lens. YMMV
interesting, especially as their warranty page specifically (albeit parenthetically) says "utilizing bulbs with factory recommended wattage"... x-pel warranty info maybe that should be 'YWMV' (Your Warranty May Vary)?! cheers! e
Hmmm. That's a great price considering it's lower then our cost. I called X-Pel and they said that they will correct the pricing on their website. The pricing for their BMW motorcycle headlight protection line retails in the $22-$25 price range.
Good point zouch. Since I'm not a lawyer or play one on TV, I would follow the text on the X-Pel warranty page.
Does anybody have a good source for the 910 lenses, I had a light fall off at about 70 mph on a goat trail in Mexico and the lens is buggered.
I'm on the road thru Sunday night, but I'll check with our PIAA distributor when I get back to see how to get a 910 lens. :):
I have waited a week for my PIAA distributor to come up with a replacement 910 lens. He has had no luck locating one from the NA PIAA distributor. My distributor has a single, unused 910 that I can get at a great (free) price. It does have a blueish tint to the lens though. Please let me know if this could help. 910s are discountinued this year. And, we know the 525's will be available soon with the hi/lo H4 bulb and switch configuration.
Chuck, that would work out great. If I'd known they planned on discontinueing them so soon I might have got something different.........shame they're a great light. There's no hurry on the light, I think you've got a package coming my way in a couple of weeks anyway, if you want to throw the light in with that.
